Don peacefully passed away at Golden West Centennial Lodge, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, after a long illness.
Don is survived by his wife, Ingrid Nickel, of Winnipeg, Manitoba, his children, Hollie (Manon), of Ottawa, Ontario, Joel (Marla), of Winnipeg, the mother of his children, Heather, of Winnipeg, his sister, Linda (Wayne), of Winnipeg, and brother, Danny, of Tucson, Arizona.
He also leaves many relatives and friends, too numerous to mention; all of whom are sad at his passing.
Don was predeceased by his parents, Leonard and Solveig Anderson.
Don was born at Eston, Saskatchewan on June 04, 1947, and spent his childhood in Lacadena and Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. He graduated from Aden Bowman Collegiate in Saskatoon in 1965.
Don was a young adult when he moved with his parents to Winnipeg, Manitoba. There, he attended the University of Winnipeg, graduating in 1970, with a B.A., majoring in psychology.
From 1970 to 1972, Don was employed as a probation and parole officer in Dauphin, Manitoba.
Post graduate studies and a career in psychology followed. In 1974, Don graduated with an M.A. in clinical psychology from Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario. In 1974, he returned to Winnipeg, where he was employed as a forensic psychologist by the Youth Court, Department of Health of Manitoba.
In 1991, Don, while working full time in Winnipeg and supporting a family, earned a Ph.D. in psychology through a distance learning program from the United States International University, in San Diego, California.
Don pursued various roles in psychological consulting, and teaching university classes in psychology. In 1996, he became self-employed, providing mental health treatment to individuals, and clinical consultation and forensic reports in the Manitoba justice system, in criminal and family matters. Don frequently appeared at all levels of court as an expert witness, where his work was well known and respected.
Don retired in 2012.
Don loved his children with his whole heart. Never a morning person, he arose early to take Joel to hockey practice. He was very proud of Joel, who played high level competitive hockey, reaching the major junior level with the St. James Canadians.
Don also loved Lake Winnipeg, sailing, his many dogs and cats, jazz, big band, and Dixieland music, cars, playing bridge and cribbage. He and Ingrid enjoyed frequent trips to Mexico and returned annually to the Club Solaris GR Caribe resort in Cancun, where they were members.
Don faced serious health challenges with fortitude and courage. He moved to assisted living in 2014, to the Heritage Lodge personal care home in 2019, and to Golden West Centennial Lodge in 2020. The family is eternally grateful to the management and staff of Golden West Centennial Lodge who cared for Don with love and compassion to the end of his life.
Cremation has taken place, and Don’s ashes will be spread in Cancun and Lake Winnipeg.
We will remember Don for his irreverent and mischievous sense of humour, superior intellect, affection, and kindness. Don tried always to be in his words, a “devout humanitarian.” In this, he succeeded.
