Sylvia Louise Mitchell (nee Carkner), beloved wife of the late Donn Mitchell, passed away at Dinsdale Personal Care Home in Brandon, Manitoba on April 2, 2026.
Sylvia was born in Brandon on October 30, 1932. She was educated in Brandon, and worked at the Brandon Flying Club before marrying Donn in November 1959. She and Donn moved to the Maples, the Mitchell family homestead, and in 1961 moved into Donn’s childhood home across the road. In 1982, Sylvia and Donn moved back to the Maples into their new home, where she lived until moving to River Heights Terrace in 2015.
Sylvia and Donn travelled widely throughout their married life, and Sylvia continued to do so after his passing in 2000. Sylvia and Donn were inducted into the Manitoba Agricultural Hall of Fame in 1997 and were honoured as the first recipients of the Westman Award for Outstanding Philanthropy in 1998. Additionally, Sylvia was honoured with an honourary Diploma in Agribusiness from Assiniboine College in 2020. Sylvia belonged to many organizations, serving as an International Officer of Quota International, Life Member of the Women’s Institute, Vice President of the Manitoba Agricultural Hall of Fame, and participated on many other boards and community organizations over her lifetime.
She is survived by her nephew Jim Green (Aran (James); Mitchell), niece Patti Green and Alvin Kowalick (Holly; Danny (Deedra); and Kelli (David)), nephew Doug and Michelle Green (Nicole; Carson (Tess)), and nephew Don Green and Jill Ransom (Alex). Sylvia was predeceased by her parents, William Carkner and Margaret Dufresne, sister Joyce, brother Reg and husband Donn. She will be lovingly remembered by the Prankie family.
Special appreciation is extended to Janet Sawatzky for her support and kindness in Sylvia’s final years, as well as to the kind staff of Dinsdale Home. A celebration of Sylvia’s life will be held at the Victoria Inn-Grand Salon, 3550 Victoria Avenue, Brandon, at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 16, 2026.
