TIMM SLANEY

August 12, 1955 - March 26, 2026

Timm Barrie Slaney was born in 1955, a good year for Chevys. As with everyone, the gift of life is accompanied with a debt. After 70 years of a life well lived, Timm’s debt was called. After suffering a heart attack in January of 2025, it was hoped that he would be able to make a full recovery, but although he took a few steps forward his health ultimately declined until his passing. He passed away suddenly at his home with Maureen Ewasko by his side.

He will be lovingly remembered by his partner and best friend, Maureen Ewasko, together with her family (which became his family); daughter Ashley Ewasko (Cory Neill); grandson Alex; and the Mestdagh brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Brian (Barb), Laurie (Kristen), Rob (Laura), and Ron; together with nieces and nephews. Timm was not a “kid person,” but his grandson Alex changed that. From the very first time he held Alex he treasured every picture, video, and time spent with him. He also thought his great-niece Addison was the best little girl he had ever met. Who knew a person could change so dramatically.

Timm was born and lived in Winnipeg, Norway House, Rivers, Stonewall, Ottawa, and Regina, and then finally moved back to Winnipeg until his passing. Some of his fondest memories were living in Rivers and he was pleased he attended his high school reunion a few years ago.

He owned motorcycles, boats, and a great many cars. Maureen was never sure when a car pulled into her driveway if it was Timm’s car, as he was always driving something new. Timm was also a partner at Rond’s Marine for a time and often said the two happiest days in a man’s life are the day he gets a boat and the day he gets rid of the boat. He had a varied career history, but cars were his true passion. He worked for various dealerships and was the fleet manager at Murray Chevrolet for many years. He won the GM of Canada Fleet Managers Club Award every year from 2002 up to 2018. He was driven, well respected, and had several articles written about him in the Winnipeg Free Press and in the Fleet Digest magazine. He retired from the automotive industry in 2020 when COVID was in full swing.

Timm was a true, proud, stubborn Irishman. He lived a meaningful life, rich with hard work and adventure, and thoroughly enjoyed retirement. He rode his bike every chance he could, and enjoyed anything to do with The Rolling Stones, spending time with family, visiting with friends, barbecuing his famous ribs, convertible rides, supper and games nights with our good friends Kelly and Rob Greenaway, and making money. He was an avid stock trader and loved to explain to others how to make money trading stocks. He enjoyed travelling and together with Maureen they went on annual summer driving trips to the United States, visited Mexico and Cuba, and cruised the Mississippi and also Europe from Budapest to Amsterdam. In February, his determination led him to make one final trip. Although it did not turn out to be the vacation of his dreams, he did manage to visit his beloved Mayan Riviera one last time.

He had many friends and acquaintances, too many to mention by name. I want to thank his longtime friend Donald Smith. Timm thoroughly enjoyed all your conversations, advice, lunches, and drop-in visits both to his home and during his hospital stay. A special mention also to his early-morning breakfast buddy Reece Barthel, and sometime breakfast attendees, Stephen Olyniuk, Glenn Cross, Ian Peterson, Les Leiman, etc.; he always enjoyed your company.

The rib master has closed the grill, removed his apron, and finished his last sip of wine. He has turned to us with a smile and a wave, and walked off the patio into the sunset. In keeping with Timm’s wishes cremation has taken place and there will be no formal services. Instead, we simply invite his friends to remember Timm by raising a glass and toasting to a life well lived.
