I was born in a castle in Matlock, England and raised in Stafford with my younger twin sisters, whom I protected fiercely, even when it annoyed them.
My love of adventure led me to leave England as a young man to work abroad in Sardinia. While there I fell in love with Italy, the food and the people, and spent the rest of my life visiting whenever I could. Next came Nigeria, and then Winnipeg, where I met my wife Ruth and forever became her "Basil!" After a short stint in Colombia, I finally settled down in Winnipeg with my family, working in the steel industry and finally retiring from Russelmetals in 2009.
For fun, I loved golfing and cricket, and the relationships I built there lasted my entire life. Saturday cricket with St. George’s Cricket Club at Assiniboine Park, would last all day and end off with a visit to the pub at night. When we switched to Wednesday evenings as Taverners Cricket Club, I felt like I had found the place where I truly belonged, and the games and work I did for the club became an especially big part of my life.
Every summer was filled with weekends at Grand Beach, where I baked in the sun during the day and cooked over a fire in the evening before crowding into the Sprite for a mosquito-filled sleep under the stars. Like clockwork, every Saturday morning I would meet my good friends Jerry and John at Grand Pines Golf Course for a round.
After retirement, my love of travelling was rekindled, leading my wife and I to visit Phoenix, Mexico, and Italy. These trips were the golden hue of these later years of my life.
Life in the Villas was like living in a park and brightened by my summertime daily toodles around the neighbourhood, Monday night bridge with the ladies, Jeopardy!, jigsaws, and crossword puzzles.
In 2019, I unfortunately started to develop health issues, meaning I needed daily HomeCare assistance. I would especially like to extend my heart felt thanks to my regular HomeCare aides that took great care of me in my last few years. You were instrumental in making my daily life so much easier. HomeCare nursing also deserves a big thank you for all they did for me. I cannot leave out my fantastic and hard-working co-ordinator Naomi who stood by me through various life challenges.
It looks like my time here has wrapped up. If you think of me, I hope it’s with a smile. Remember our conversations, our good times, and our challenges, and take care of each other.
I am survived by my wife Ruth, sons, Terence (Alisha), and Daniel; grandchildren, Jaeden and Lillian; sisters Ann (Dave) and Christine and their families.

Ruth and family. I am so sorry for the loss of your beloved Mike. I worked with him whilst at Lyman Tubeco back in the late 80's. He was a charming, funny and kind man - my favorite person at the company, frankly. he was always in good humor - was great story teller and I really enjoyed working with him. may his jocular and wise spirit live on for you all. RIP Mike. - Posted by: Lisa (former co worker) on: Jul 04, 2026
