IGNAZIA (ZINA) BATTAGLIA
With profound love and gratitude for a life beautifully lived, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Ignazia (Zina) Battaglia, on July 11, 2026, at the age of 92.
Zina was born on May 25, 1934, in Termini Imerese, Italy, to her loving parents, Salvatore and Maria Demma. From an early age, she embraced the values of faith, family, perseverance, and compassion - principles that became the foundation of her life.
In 1958, Zina immigrated to Canada, where she married Antonino. Together, they built a new life through sacrifice, hard work, and unwavering faith. Side by side, they created a home rooted in love, where the traditions of their Sicilian heritage, their devotion to God, and the sanctity of family were cherished every day.
Zina believed that family was life's greatest blessing. She worked tirelessly to care for her family and provide opportunities for her children.
She instilled in her family the values that defined her life: dignity of honest, hard work, unwavering faith in the Lord, the importance of community, and a deep commitment to caring for one another. She taught by example that life's greatest riches were not measured by possessions, but by love, generosity, and gratitude.
Her kitchen was the heart of her home, where family gathered around tables filled with traditional Italian dishes. Laughter was always welcome, stories were always shared, and no one ever left her home hungry. Her warmth and hospitality created memories that will be treasured forever. She dearly valued her friendships over the years, particularly her Monday afternoon prayer group, which felt like family to her.
We, her children, will remember our mother for her strength, wisdom, humour, and unwavering devotion to us. We are eternally grateful for her.
She was predeceased by her parents, her two brothers, one sister, and her beloved husband, Antonino (2009). She is survived by her sister, Rosetta (Italy); her children, Maria, Frank (Carmelina), and Salvatore; and her grandchildren: Alexandra (Jamie, Charlotte), Amanda (Joe, Alessandro), Paolo (Andrea), and Daniella (Dom).
Though our hearts are heavy with sorrow, we are comforted by the extraordinary legacy she leaves behind. She now rests in the eternal peace of the Lord, whom she trusted throughout her life. She will be deeply missed, forever loved, and always remembered.
A viewing will be held on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 510 River Ave. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m., celebrated by Father Michael Savarimuthu. Entombment will follow at Holy Angel Mausoleum, Highway 1 East.
Should friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to the Gastrointestinal and Endoscopy Department through the St. Boniface Hospital Foundation.
