Fred leaves to mourn his four children, Fred (Sharon), William Donald (Diane), Heather Sigurdson (Randy) and Diane Lynn. Grandchildren, Jordan, Shauna (fiance Oliver Oike), Candice, Andrea and Samantha Pratt, Ryan and Lana Sigurdson. Sisters, Williamina ONeill and Emily Carlson (Wally "The Swede"). Sisters-in-law Nicky Pratt, Phyl Sutherland and Wynn Hosfield. Alfred was predeceased by his beloved wife Dorothy Mabel in May 1998, parents Alfred and Williamina Pratt, brother Doug and brother-in-law James ONeill as well as numerous Sutherland in-laws. Fred was born May 10, 1916 in Morse, Sask. He left home at an early age working at various jobs. Dad often spoke of his fond memories and good times shared with the Ritchie cousins during those early years on the farms in the Stonewall area. He eventually started work at MacDonald Bros. Sheet Metal in 1940. Fred joined the Air Force during the Second World War as a Flight Engineer and was later commissioned as a Pilot Officer flying in the Halifax Bomber out of Linton-On-Ouse in England. Upon returning home from overseas he continued his employment with Bristol Aerospace retiring in 1976 as Foreman of the Turbo Shop. Many years later Dad was reunited with some of his air crew members. His skipper Jim "Fitz" Fitzsimmons offered Dad a chance to return to England and Scotland to revisit the wartime air bases where they had been stationed. Dad enjoyed that trip immensely and spoke of it often. Thank you "Fitz". Fred married the love of his life, Dorothy Mabel Sutherland on November 2, 1946. They resided in West Kildonan all of their married life. He was very devoted to his wife and they were seldom apart during their 51 years together. Both were thought of as the "Good-Will Ambassadors" of the Sutherland family. Dad will be greatly missed by his nieces, nephews and many good friends. Fred was an avid golfer and enjoyed numerous games over the years with golfing buddies, extended family and his grandchildren. Dad enjoyed the many summer holidays spent out at the streetcar in Lundar. Grampa was known as an expert "Mr. Fix-it". It was well known that "If all else fails - ask Grampa". Dad gave tremendous support to his children and we are grateful for that. The family wishes to thank all those who have helped Dad in the past two years, especially Frederico and Bruna Papetti who have been not only good neighbours but close friends. At Dads request cremation has taken place. For those wishing to join the family there will be a burial at Sunnyside Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, May 14. (north on Highway 59, east on Garven Rd.) Also at Dads request an Open House will take place at 3:00 p.m. at 130 Forrest Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
