JACOB (JAKE) POETKER On Tuesday, December 19, after a long struggle with Alzheimers, Jake Poetker passed away peacefully at the age of 68 at the Bethania Personal Care Home. He is survived by his wife, Wilma (Harder) daughters, Sharlyne (Ken) Neufeld, Carillee; son Michael; grandchildren, Amber, Alexander and Jacob; sisters, Betty (Walter) Loepp, Mary (David) Toews; brother John (Ursula) and many nieces and nephews. Jake was predeceased by his parents, Rev. John and Elizabeth Poetker. Jake was born on April 15, 1932, and lived most of his life in Arnaud, moving to Winnipeg in 1992. In earlier years, he and his brother operated a bulk fuel and fertilizer business and repair shop. Later they went into grain farming. Jake took particular pride in a clean field of good quality grain. He enjoyed flying his airplane, golfing and curling, as well as travelling. He was active as a volunteer with Mennonite Disaster Service. Jake will always be remembered for his hospitality and his willingness to help others. A memorial service for Jake will be held on Wednesday, December 27 at 7:00 p.m. at the Bethel Mennonite Church, Stafford and Carter, in Winnipeg. Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Peter and Annie Harder Scholarship Fund at Canadian Mennonite Bible College, 500 Shaftesbury Blvd., R3P 0M4, Canadian Food Grains Bank, 400-280 Smith St., R3C 1K2, or Bethania Personal Care Home, 1045 Concordia Ave., R2K 3S7. The family wishes to thank the staff of Bethania Personal Care Home for the excellent care extended to Jake during his two year stay in the Home.
