ANTONIO PASQUALE CONTE January 27, 1908 - January 17, 2001 Respecting his wishes, Antonio Conte passed away peacefully at his residence on January 17, 2001, ten days before his 93rd birthday. Maria, his wife of 58 years, predeceased him on January 31, 1987 and his son-in-law, Giuseppe Filippelli, in 1996. Antonio leaves to mourn his only son, Gennarino and his wife Darlene Conte, and his four daughters, Teresa Filippelli, Flavia and husband Antonio Chilelli, Remigia and husband Mario Gaudio, Clelia and husband Nicola Di Santo; grandchildren, Anthony and Tania Conte, Tarcisio Filippelli, Tonina and Agostino Fiorentino, Erminia Chilelli, Giuseppe and Lauren Chilelli, Gerry Gaudio, Mariella and Rick Mayhew, Manuela Gessner, Marcello Di Santo; and great-grandchildren, Anthony, Joseph, Caitlin, Antonio, Maria, Micaela, Braidan, Quintin, Dario and Danica; plus relatives in Italy and New York, and many friends. Born on January 27, 1908 Antonio lived in Mendicino, Italy and later worked in Africa, Albania and Germany. Searching for a better life for his family, he immigrated to Canada on April 28, 1951 to work for the Canadian National Railways. Initially settling in Sioux Lookout, ON, Antonio and Maria moved to Winnipeg in 1964 to be closer to their family. Employed by Victors Concrete Ltd., Antonio worked as a cement finisher until his retirement in 1973. After his retirement and even up to this past summer, Antonio loved to spend his time in his wonderful gardens, doing cement projects and helping his family. His special animal companions, Fleury, Akita, Iago, and Clea, gave him much joy. In August, 2000, Antonio travelled to Italy to visit his brother, Vincenzo Madrigrano and family. Special thanks to Riverview Health Centre Home Care staff Alexandra and Cindy, Home Care attendants Dolor and Pearl, VON nurse Louise, and Drs. Coyle, Garcia, DeGroot and Mulder, for enabling Antonio to spend his last days at home. Prayers will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, January 19 at Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church, 510 River Ave. Rev. Fr. Sam Argenziano will officiate at the Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, January 20 at 10:00 am. Pallbearers are grandsons, Anthony, Giuseppe, Gerry, Agostino, Tarcisio, Rick and Marcello. Entombment will follow at Assumption Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made in memory of Antonio to Riverview Health Centre Foundation, the Palliative Care Unit, 1 Morley Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3L 2P4.
