DOUGLAS GORDON RATHWELL Passed away peacefully at Deer Lodge Centre on Tuesday, January 16, 2001 at the age of 80 years. Doug will be lovingly remembered by his children, Andy (Emily), Port Hardy, B.C. and Janet (Mac) McMillan, Winnipeg, and their mother Pat, Brandon. He is also survived by several cousins, nieces and a nephew. He was predeceased by his parents, Mamie and Wellington Rathwell; sister Gwen and brother Don. Doug was born in Brandon, June 27, 1920, moving to Winnipeg at an early age. He enlisted in the R.A.F. in 1940, earning his pilots wings in Yorkton in February, 1941. He was sent to England where he completed his advanced training in the Midlands. Doug was a pilot in No. 172 and No. 179 Squadrons, R.A.F. through two tours of duty, primarily flying on anti-submarine patrol. He flew Wellingtons and Lancasters on bombing and coastal commands out of Devon and Gibraltar, returning to Canada due to illness in December, 1944. Doug resided in Winnipeg until moving to Brandon in 1956, where he was employed by Canada Manpower and Immigration, retiring in 1977. He returned to Winnipeg to reside in 1993, living in Lions Place until 1998 when he moved to Deer Lodge Centre. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Brandon No. 13 for over 50 years. A memorial service will be held in the chapel, Deer Lodge Centre, on Friday, January 19 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Jim Hatherly of John Black Memorial United Church officiating. Private interment will take place on Saturday, January 20 in the Veterans Section, Brandon Cemetery with Rev. Harold Nightingale officiating. The family wishes to extend their deep appreciation to the wonderful staff of T5, Deer Lodge Centre, for their ongoing care and support over the past two years. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations in Dougs memory may be made to the Deer Lodge Centre Foundation, 2109 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3J 0L3.
