MABEL MARY BEHRENDS On Wednesday, September 5, 2001, Mabel Mary Behrends, passed away peacefully at Kinplace Personal Care Home in Oakbank, MB. Mabel was predeceased by husband George in 1965. She leaves to cherish her memory one daughter Joyce; one son Allan and wife Diana and grandchildren, Crystal (Daryl) and Geoffrey. Mabel was born in 1905 in Winnipeg, the only child of James and Christianna Barratt. She attended Daniel MacIntyre Collegiate and was in the first graduating class of 1923. Subsequently she was enrolled in Normal School (Teachers College) and began her career in a country school at Spear Hill, MB. She then taught at Norquay School for several years prior to her marriage to George in 1935. Mabel and George moved to Woodhaven in West Winnipeg and raised their children. Mabel was active in her community being a Member of the Woodhaven Literary Club, a volunteer for the Girl Guides, and a hostess to the numerous friends that she and George had made through his interest in Amateur (Ham) Radio. In 1957, the family moved to the Pine Ridge Area where George stared the first tree farm in Manitoba. Here Mabel made many new friends and was involved in yet another community. She did some substitute teaching at the Pine Ridge School and was a leader for the 4H Club. She also took great pleasure being a member of the Pine Ridge Social and Sewing Clubs. The Oakbank library was one of her favourite places and she assisted there on a regular basis. Her other interests included, oil painting, gardening and needlework. An avid birdwatcher, she thrilled at the variety of birds that fed daily on her windowsill. For the past many years, Mabel was a participant of the Silver Threads Seniors Club at Kinplace where she encountered friends and excelled at carpet bowling. Mabel will be remembered for her sunny disposition and positive attitude. If you were to ask her to have a good day she would quickly reply, "Every day is a good day!" Our heartfelt thanks to the entire staff of Kinplace Personal Care Home who indeed gave special and superior care to Mabel. The environment that was provided certainly allowed her to live in dignity and comfort. It was evident that she was truly loved by the staff. A service of celebration of Mabels life will be held at Holy Trinity Anglican Church on Tuesday, September 11 at 11:00 a.m., with Rev. Robin Mather officiating. Interment will follow at Sunnyside Cemetery, near Oakbank. Flowers gratefully declined. Memorial tributes may be made to Kinplace Personal Care Home, Box 28, Oakbank, MB R0E 1J0.
