She encouraged her children to excel in the art and in academics and saw them all rise in their professions. She began a new life in Canada in 1971 with her son and daughter-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Venkataraman. With her innate zest for life, she overcame the difficulties of language, climate, and isolation from the culture she was familiar with to become mother and grandmother ("Thathi") to all. She was a beloved and respected member of the Indian communities in Winnipeg and in Indianapolis. Mrs. Ammal enjoyed gardening, games and many crafts; her work has been displayed in crafts shows and in museums. She also enjoyed travel and made many trips through Canada and the United States, as well as India. The family would like to thank the many friends who have surrounded "Thathi" with warmth and love. We would like to extend our gratitude and appreciation to the extraordinary team of doctors (Dr. Raj Vijayaraghavan in Winnipeg and Dr. Ramana Moorthy in Indianapolis) and Home Care Coordinator Lynda Sie, home care providers (Lydia, Eva, Bamitalle, Debbie, Christina, Gail, Urzula, Juliane, Jennifer, Tina, Linda, Beth, Amy, Sunita and RN Geoff) whose punctuality, dedication and affectionate service made it possible for Thathi to remain in the home she loved.
