ALBERT WALTER (WALLY) POWNEY On Sunday, September 30, 2001, our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Albert Walter Powney passed away at the age of 93 years. He leaves to mourn his passing, his dear wife of 61 years Blanche, his sons, Jim (Shirley) and Donald (Anne) and his grandchildren, Michelle (Jeff), Jenny (Mark), Brenna, Reed and Rylan; as well as his brothers, Leslie and Sidney, and an extensive and close family of sisters- and brothers-in law, nieces, nephews, and many friends. He was predeceased by his brothers Ernest and John, and sister Angela. Wally was born on October 6, 1907 in London, England. He immigrated to Canada with his family at the age of 13, where the family homesteaded in Valpoy, MB, and then later moved to Ste. Rose du Lac. He worked in Ste. Rose for a number of years, where he met and married Blanche Lepine on September 17, 1940. A few years later, Wally and Blanche, with their two sons, moved to Mafeking, where they operated a general store. In 1954, the family moved to Winnipeg, where Wally worked as a store manager for Shop Easy, until he purchased his own store on Nairn Ave, which he and Blanche operated until the mid-sixties. He then worked for Irenes Grocery until his (first) retirement at age 65. Unable to sit still, he then worked at the University of Winnipeg library for seven years, until he retired again. In the past 20 years, Dads active lifestyle kept him very busy. He enjoyed travelling to Australia, England, Hawaii and across Canada, as well as his involvement in Knights of Columbus, Eager Beavers, bridge clubs and square dancing. He had many friends, all of which will remember his ready smile and sharp sense of humour. Dad was a man with a passionate spirit and an unrelenting thirst for all life could offer. He maintained a keen interest in world events and advances, even purchasing his first computer at age 90, so that he could explore the internet and exchange e-mail with his family. Dads dedicated and loving attention to his family was a constant source of joy and support to us. He enjoyed a very close relationship with his sons, daughters-in-law and grandchildren, the memories of which will buoy us through this tough time. We will miss him dearly. The Prayer Vigil will take place on Wednesday, October 3 at 8:30 p.m. at Holy Redeemer Roman Catholic Church, 288 Donwood Drive. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, October 4, at 1:30 p.m., also at Holy Redeemer. The Rev. Fr. Raymond Baudry will be presiding. Interment will follow in Green Acres Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, friends and family may wish to make donations in Dads name to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
