MARIE BLANCHE MELINA POWNEY (nee LEPINE) Peacefully, on Friday, November 2, 2001, Marie Blanche Melina Powney passed away, with her family by her side. Blanche was predeceased by her devoted husband Walter just four weeks earlier. She leaves to cherish her memory, her loving sons, James (Shirley) and Donald (Anne) her grandchildren, Michelle (Jeff), Jenny (Mark), Brenna, Reed and Rylan; as well as her sisters, Marie and Germaine; brothers, Emile, Rene and Wilfred; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her sisters, Lillianne, Mathilde and Eugenie. Mom was born April 13, 1915 in Forget, SK, to James Lepine of St Boniface and Marie Humbert of Forcelles, France. As a young adult, she left the family farm to work in a number of communities, including Grand Clariaire, Tisby, and Dauphin, before moving to Ste Rose du Lac, MB. It was here that she met her husband, Walter. They were married on September 17, 1940. After a few years, Mom and Dad, with their two young sons, moved to Mafeking. There they operated a general store, until 1954, when the family moved to Winnipeg. Mom and Dad owned and operated a store on Nairn Ave for a number of years. After selling the store, Mom was employed by the Hudson Bay Company in downtown Winnipeg, where she worked for nearly 20 years. Mom was always a flurry of activity. A tireless worker, she never liked to sit still -- if there was anything to be done, she would do it. Yet, she knew how to relax and have fun as well. Mom was happiest when she was amongst family and friends. Her optimistic and cheerful approach to life kept her ever smiling, and made her delightful company. The many friends she made through square-dancing, bridge clubs and Eager Beavers are testament to her warm and fun-loving personality. The last couple years of Moms life were difficult for her, as she coped with a restricted mobility as the result of a stroke. The close relationships that she had developed with her family and many friends, however, ensured that she was surrounded with love through these times. She received wonderful care from homecare professionals, and the dedicated staff of both Middlechurch and Donwood Personal Care Homes. We thank all of the nurses for their care and attention to Mom. The Prayer Vigil will take place on Tuesday, November 6 at 7:30 p.m. at Green Acres Funeral Home, Highway #1 and Green Acres Lane. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, November 7, at 2:00 p.m. at Holy Redeemer Roman Catholic Church, 288 Donwood Ave. The Rev. Fr. Raymond Baudry will be presiding. Interment will follow at Green Acres Memorial Garden. In lieu of flowers, friends and family may wish to make donations in Moms name to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
