MARGARET H. "NAN" THORNE (nee COLE) It is with great sadness that her family announces the passing of Margaret (Nan) Thorne, at Riverview Health Centre. A life filled with love and caring came to a close on November 17, 2001, at the age of 96, peacefully and with family by her side. She was predeceased by her husband, Harry Thorne; two brothers; a sister and an infant great-grandson, David Thorne. Born in Leicester, England, Nan came to Canada in 1911 with her parents, William and Mary Ann Cole, where they settled in Miami, MB. In her early years she helped her mother at the Miami Cottage Hospital. Soon after graduating as a nurse in Morden, she married Harry Thorne in 1928. Following her husbands untimely death in 1937, Nan returned to Miami to raise her three young children. There she engaged in nursing and dressmaking while providing a warm and nurturing home life for her family. In 1944 Nan brought her family to live in Winnipeg, where she nursed at The King Edward Hospital and later at Deer Lodge. Following her retirement in 1965, Nan devoted much of her time to volunteer work. The Red Cross, Save the Children, and Agape Table benefited from her many hours of service. A life member of the U.C.W., she was especially devoted in giving generous support and service to her church, Churchill Park United. She enjoyed the eight happy years of living in Lions Manor. Nan was a founding member of the R.A.P. Committee, a group formed to assist new residents adjust to life in the Manor. Wherever she went and whatever she did, Nans life was centered on providing help and care for anyone in need. Hers was a life truly well lived. Whether Nan was working on a quilt, sewing for her family, making clothes for her grandchildren, her hands were always busy. She could whip up a pie or cake in no time and always had plenty of cookies when family came to visit. Our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend was a beautiful person in every way. Nan enriched the lives of all who knew her. She will forever be a part of us. Nan is survived by her three children, Ruth (Gerald) of Tulsa, Bill (Dorothy) of Winnipeg, and Jim (Marjorie) of White Rock, and her sister Mary. She loved and enjoyed her 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. There was a special relationship with her Winnipeg grandchildren, Tim (Gro), Nancy (Ron), David (Sue) and Laura (Warren) and each of their children. A service of remembrance will be held on Wednesday, November 21 at 1:30 p.m. in the Churchill Park United Church, 525 Beresford St., with Rev. Russell Wardell, officiating. Following cremation, interment will be made in the family plot in the Miami Cemetery, at a later date. Our family would like to convey many thanks to the staff of C-D4 Riverview Health Centre. The caring and compassion of all the staff was absolutely wonderful. A special thanks for care during moms final days is gratefully extended to Pat, Catherine, Marie, Darlene and Mila. If friends so desire, memorial donations in Nans memory may be made to the charity of ones choice. LEATHERDALE GARDINER 1858 Portage Avenue 949-4872
