JULIUS HANNES THOMASSON Peacefully with his family by his side, Hannes passed away at the St. Boniface Hospital on Wednesday, December 19, 2001. He will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife, Kristin, of 52 years; his children, Doug (Denise), Ingrid Jones and Lori (Jim) Bain; six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; sister Helga (Jim) Block; sister-in-law Herborg Thomasson; brother-in-law Thor (Marge) Sigurdson; many nieces, nephews, friends and caregivers. He was predeceased by parents, Arni and Ingunn Thomasson; brothers, Jonathan, Thomas, Paul, Steini; sisters, Gunna, Emma Danielson, Rose Hjartarson, Kaye Breckman; sister-in-law Inga Sigurdson; brother-in-law Steini Isfeld. Hannes was born and raised on a farm in the 1-6 district near Morden, MB. He moved to Winnipeg and joined the staff at Eatons. During the war he was employed with an Aircraft plant in Thunder Bay, ON. Following the war, he resumed work at the T. Eaton Co. There was no challenge too great for Hannes, from carpentry, doing repairs, sewing and calling square dances, his talents were many. He was president of Norberry Community Club and active in community club affairs. Square dancing was a big part of his life. He taught and was caller for Sashay 8s as well as other square dance groups. Their basement was always available for teaching novice squares and many have fond memories of those times. His amazing ability with a sewing machine created many bridal gowns, draperies, beautiful square dance outfits etc. He built his family home at 121 Barrington Ave., He designed and built a motor home out of an old Eatons van. He belonged to the Icelandic National League, Logberg-Heimskringla paper and the Icelandic Canadian Magazine. Hannes enjoyed travelling; trips to Iceland, Hawaii, cruise and several trips around Canada and USA. He had a positive outlook on life and a great desire to live life to its fullest. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 22 at First Lutheran church, 580 Victor St. (wheelchair accessible at south side of building) at 10:30 a.m., Interment to follow at 1-6 Cemetery, Morden. Pallbearers will be grandchildren, Krissy Thomasson, Michael Thomasson, Brandy Jones, Derek Jones, James and Christopher Bain. If so desired, donations may be made to First Lutheran Church, 580 Victor St., Winnipeg, MB, R3G 1R2, Stroke Recovery Association, 1-333 Vaughn St., Winnipeg, MB, R3B 3J9, or 1-6 Cemetery Fund, in care of L. Einarson, 231 - 7th St., Morden, MB., R6M 1M9. Much appreciation and thanks to Home Care, Staff at St. Boniface Hospital and all family and dear friends for love and support.
