Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryELIZABETH (BETTY) MARGARET POLZ Suddenly on Tuesday morning, May 7, 2002, Elizabeth Margaret Polz (nee Stefaniuk) passed away at the family home at the age of 64. Left to cherish her memory are her husband Albin; her mother Helen; sons, Robert, James and Edward (and wife Sonja) daughters, Diana and Susan (and fiance Kris) and her grandsons, Jordan and Matthew. She was predeceased by her father William (Basil) Stefaniuk on June 30, 1974. She also grieved the loss of her grandson Kent who seemingly disappeared in the fall of 2001. Elizabeth Margaret was born on March 8, 1938 in Winnipeg. A graduate of St. Marys Academy and Normal School (Teachers College), Betty taught at Brooklands and St. Alphonsus Schools. She married Albin Joseph Polz on September 24, 1960 in St. Marys Cathedral, Winnipeg. She became a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who stressed her worth and dignity as a homemaker. Betty and Al were active members of St. Marys Cathedral Parish since their younger days of involvement with the Catholic Youth Organization. For many years, in both good times and bad, Betty enjoyed singing Gods praise as a member of the cathedral choir. Especially during weekday liturgies, she was a lector who proclaimed Gods word with clarity and conviction. She was one of the first women of the parish to assist on a regular basis in the distribution of Holy Communion. Betty served in various capacities on parish committees and groups where everyone respected her common sense, ability to organize and especially her sense of humour and hospitality. She was a longtime member of The Catholic Womens League of Canada and had served in various executive positions on the parish, diocesan and provincial levels. When their son Robert became pastor of the neighbouring parish of St. Edward the Confessor in 1999, Betty and Al decided it was time to follow him and become parishioners there. Although Bettys health was deteriorating, they made many new friends at St. Edwards and became involved in the R.C.I.A. process helping to evangelize and welcome new members into the full communion of the Catholic Church. She also continued her participation in the Catholic Womens League by joining the St. Edwards council. Now that God has called us to bid her farewell in the hope of the Resurrection, the family returns Elizabeth Margaret to St. Marys Cathedral, the mother church of the archdiocese in which she began her Christian journey 64 years ago through the sacrament of Baptism. Prayer vigil for the deceased will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday (tonight), May 9 at Knysh Funeral Chapel, 1020 Main St. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 10 at St. Marys Cathedral, 353 St. Mary Ave., with her son Rev. Fr. Robert Polz as presiding priest and brother priests and friends concelebrating. Rite of Committal to follow in Assumption Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bettys memory to LArche Winnipeg Inc., 2nd Floor, 109 Bond St., Winnipeg, MB, R2C 2L1. KNYSH FUNERAL CHAPEL 582-0973 Lord, for your faithful people life is changed, not ended. When the body of our earthly dwelling lies in death We gain an everlasting dwelling place in heaven!
