Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDR. TED GUPTON It is with profound sadness that the family announces the death of Dr. Ted Gupton, on January 16, 2003 in Duncan, BC. Ted is survived by Annette, his beloved wife and best friend; sons, Michael and his wife Lisa Strong of Sundown, MB and Sean of Minneapolis, MN; daughter, Maureen Cuddy and her husband Jon of Winnipeg and a sister Frieda Adams of Paducah, KY. Ted was a loving husband and father who was extremely proud of his family and their accomplishments. He was the joy of Annettes life. Ted was born in Cunningham, KY on September 6, 1941. At an early age, he moved to California and grew up in the Los Angeles area. In 1966, he graduated from California State University at Fullerton with a B.A. in psychology. He obtained his masters degree in psychology from California State University at Sacramento in 1968 and in the same year came to Canada to pursue graduate studies at the University of Manitoba. In 1972 he became one of the first students to graduate from the University of Manitoba with a Ph.D. in clinical psychology and was one of the first clinical psychologists in Manitoba to engage in private practice. Throughout his career, Ted held a variety of professional and academic appointments and was highly valued as a consultant. He was Director of the Sexuality Clinic, Health Sciences Centre (1975 - 1991), Associate Professor, Department of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine (1975 - 1992), and served as a consultant to the R.C.M.P. and the Northern Medical Unit. Ted was an active member of his profession and was very involved in professional activities as a leader and role model. He gave enthusiastically and generously of his time and expertise serving as Chair and Vice-Chair of the Board of Directors, Manitoba Mental Health Research Foundation and on numerous committees of the Psychological Association of Manitoba including President and Chair of the Council of Psychologists. He was recognized by his colleagues for his many contributions with the Distinguished Service Award, Psychological Association of Manitoba and the Clifford J. Robson Distinguished Psychologist in Manitoba Award, Manitoba Psychological Society. In 1986, Ted was made a Fellow of the Canadian Psychological Association and in 1989 was recognized as a Distinguished Life Member by the Manitoba Psychological Society. Nationally, Ted was a member of the National Professional Advisory Panel, The Sex Information and Education Council of Canada and served as Chair of the Advisory Council of Provincial Associations of Psychology, Canada. Ted was a strong community minded individual who was always willing to volunteer his assistance to others or to a cause he valued. During a blizzard he liked nothing better than braving the storm and helping people out with his trusty Jeep. As a member of Westminster United Church, he was actively involved in the life and work of the church. Ted was an individual who embraced life fully. Always eager to pursue new adventures, he and Annette travelled widely to such destinations as Costa Rica, Australia, Fiji, and the Caribbean. Together they enjoyed the sun, exploring coral reefs and observing wildlife. Ted had many interests -- woodworking, scuba diving, jazz and blues music, wine tasting, gourmet dining -- but the Canadian outdoors, especially cottage life with his family at the Lake of the Woods, was his real passion. A true outdoors man and pioneer spirit at heart Ted loved fishing and hunting and was an avid boating and snowmobile enthusiast. He was a kind and generous husband, father, and friend who enriched the lives of those around him. His wit and sense of humour enlivened our days; his care and compassion consoled us in times of trouble. Our loss is immeasurable, but forever in our memories is the joy of the experiences we shared, the warmth of his loving heart, and the knowledge that his was a life well lived. The family would like to acknowledge all those who have been a source of comfort and assistance during this difficult time. A special thank you to Regina Scholte of Duncan, BC for her kindness and support. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 25 in Westminster United Church, Maryland and Westminster, at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army.

Ted was in two psychology classes in which I was enrolled at Cal State at Fullerton. I remember him as being friendly, but serious. He was very conscientious in class, taking notes most of the time. I particularly remember that he was left-handed. My condolences to the family for the lost of this beautiful soul. - Posted by: Pamela Johnson (Classmate at Cal State College at Fulterton) on: Mar 30, 2016
