ELIZABETH MELBA GRILLS (STANDEN, nee BRUDENELL) Peacefully, on Thursday, January 23, 2003 our dearest mother, grandmother and great-grandmother left us to join her beloved Leslie in heaven. Melba is survived by her three children, Iris Grills of Ottawa, Joyce (Gordon) Christie of Winnipeg, and Roy (Benva) Standen of Oakville, ON. Also cherishing her memory are seven grandchildren, along with numerous great-grandchildren. Mom was born in Kimbolton, Rutland, England on September 12, 1900. She left her homeland in 1919 and immigrated to Canada, where she and Leslie began their life together and started a family in Winnipeg. In 1950, Leslie passed away suddenly, and in 1956, she married Mervin Grills whom she cared for and loved until his death in 1970. Throughout her life her Anglican faith sustained her. A wonderfully kind friend to many, Melba was first and foremost a devoted mother and grandmother with boundless love for her family. Carrying herself through every day with dignity and decorum while bringing her special brand of happiness to the world, she loved to laugh, enjoyed time spent playing cards, and any opportunity made available to work a knitting needle. Gram told us many stories of her years in England, her experiences through two World Wars and the Great Depression, and left us with an everlasting appreciation of her great spirit for life. She took tremendous pride in the accomplishments of her family, always encouraging them in their endeavours. Special gratitude is extended to Moms caregivers who showed remarkable devotion and compassion towards her in her final years. A service will be held on Monday, January 27 at 11:00 a.m. at the Leatherdale Gardiner Funeral Chapel, 1501 Waverley St. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Red Cross Society, PO Box 2441, STN Main, Winnipeg, MB R3C 9Z9.
