JOSIE WANDA PETERS (MILLER) (DR. J.W. MILLER) Peacefully after a long and courageous battle with cancer our mother, Josie Peters passed away on January 26, 2003 at the age of 72. Mom was predeceased by her parents, Filip Miller in 1962 and Bernice Miller in 1994. She will be deeply missed by her sons, Blair and Dwight; daughters-in-law, Beryl and Sue; grandchildren, Brock, Merridy, Kerensa and Eagan; estranged husband Ken Peters; and her many family and friends. Mom was born in Winnipegs North End in 1930. She was an exceptional student graduating from Issac Newton High School in 1947. The Miller family was the focal point of her childhood and teen years. She cherished the memories of the Sunday family dinners, trips to Winnipeg Beach in the Hillman Minx and the time spent with her many aunts, uncles and cousins. Mom attended the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Manitoba graduating with her doctorate in 1954, one of the few women to do so at that time thus starting a 45 year career in medicine. She was married to Ken Peters in 1954 and Blair and Dwight were born soon after. She continued on in her role as doctor and mother achieving her diploma in Psychiatry in 1965 and subsequently practicing at the Selkirk Hospital, Child Guidance Clinic and the Manitoba Youth Centre until her retirement in 1996. As Dr. Miller she was dedicated to the many children and teens she worked with, touching many lives and was highly respected by her colleagues and patients. Moms main commitment though was to her family and she was a warm, supportive, loving daughter, mother, mother-in-law and grandmother. After her fathers passing, she spent an increasing amount of time with her mother. They enjoyed travelling together reuniting with their family in Poland in 1967 and made many trips to Saskatoon, Whitehorse and Toronto to visit Blair and Dwight. They became best friends and were devoted to each other. Mom soon became Grandma Jo and she immersed herself in the many happy hours spent with her grandchildren playing, driving, cooking and sharing. Throughout her life, she was an avid reader, knitter and cook. After her retirement, these activities and spending time with her family, extended families and many dear friends brought her great comfort especially in her illness. The family would like to thank all the staff and volunteers at the Palliative Care Wards at the Riverview Health Centre and Grace Hospital for their compassion and excellent care and for making Moms final days peaceful and dignified. At her request, Mom will be cremated and her ashes laid to rest between her parents at Elmwood Cemetery in the spring. Mom wanted to express her sincere thanks to family, friends and colleagues who were supportive, understanding and caring during her life and lengthy illness. In lieu of flowers and a service, please remember our mother every December 17 and donations may be made to the Grace Hospital Hospice, River Health Care Centre Palliative Unit or a charity of your choice.
