BARBARA JOAN THOMAS (nee SHAW) May 19, 1932 - January 30, 2003 With great sadness the family announces the passing of their beloved, wife, mother and grandmother, Joan Thomas on Thursday, January 30, 2003 at the I.C.U., Concordia Hospital, with her family by her side. Her memory will be cherished by her husband of 48 years, Lionel; their sons, Richard (Roxanne), Greg (Marie), Glen (Sharon), and Wayne (Dianne) her mother-in-law Martha Thomas and her brother Leonard Shaw (Shelley) grandchildren, Jamie, Richard, Sean, Sarah, Julie, Ben, Nysa, Trevor, and Timothy; also her niece and nephew, Chloe and Max. Joan was predeceased by her parents, Ernie and Ada Shaw. Joan was born and raised in Winnipeg, in the West Kildonan area. She met and married Lionel and they moved to Elmwood and then Transcona where they raised their four sons and enjoyed the company and friendship of their many neighbours. Mom will be remembered for the unconditional love she had for her family and the support she provided us as we grew and nurtured our own families. Mom would never try to tell us how to raise her grandchildren but she would provide advice when she thought it was needed. It is this love and caring we will always remember. Mom was diagnosed with leukemia almost 20 years ago; she was able to keep it in remission all these years until a few short months ago. Moms body became weak and tired and just couldnt fight the disease anymore. Mom didnt give up without a fight; her strength gave us courage. Mom was a devoted volunteer for the Canadian Cancer Society, collecting pledges for the past 10 years. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society in Moms memory. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at St. Martins in the Field Anglican Church, 160 Smithfield Ave., Saturday, February 15 at 1:30 p.m. The family would like to thank the excellent and caring staff at the Concordia Hospital, specifically the doctors and nurses of the I.C.U. for their care of Mom. "God must have needed another angel in heaven as truly we are missing one here with us." Transcona Funeral Chapel in care of arrangements.
