JAMES JOHN THORSTEINSON April 30, 1939 - October 12, 2002 Suddenly and tragically Jim lost his life on October 12, 2002. He is survived by his wife Marion; his children, Dan, Tracy and Bob; grandchildren, Robert, Miguel and Paris; and his sister Carol; and brother Calvin. He was predeceased by his daughter Susan (born 1964) in November 2000, his brother Tom in 2001, his father Steve in 1976 and his mother Agnes in 2002. Jim served the Winnipeg Fire Department for 32 years and did his duties diligently and proudly. Jim had many interests and hobbies. He was a very talented visual artist and had a flare for representing natural and spiritual themes. In the last several years Jim was a member of the Southglen fiddle group and enjoyed many happy hours playing fiddle with his friends. Jims cremated remains will be scattered in the waters of Lake of the Woods where he and his family spent many of the happiest years of his life. A portion of Jims remains will rest at St. Vital Cemetery beside his beloved daughter Susan. Thank you Jim (Poppy) for the legacies you have left behind for your family and friends. It is with deep sadness that we will not have you in our lives, but we will continue to feel and take comfort in your presence. "In my life I was loved by you" Marion

  • I’ve thought of you many many times over the past 20 years. I think back to when we met at Quest Musique on Provencher, around 1997, and you invited me to the Southglen Fiddlers. I’m still a member. I appreciate all the help you gave me to design and build the restaurant on St Anne’s Rd. I remember the time You played your fiddle in all areas of the demolished restaurant, to find where the best sound was to build the stage, and we basically built the restaurant around that spot. All the jam sessions, laughs and great fiddle times. You inspired me so much in music and art, and in life. I still have and cherish the music stand you built for me, with the canoe on front, and the music notation of Wiskey Before Breakfast, hand painted, a work of art. You were taken from us, but still live in us. I can still hear your fiddle. - Posted by: Larry Martineau (Fiddle Friend) on: Jun 22, 2022

  • Miguel and I miss you poppy, life would have been so much better with you here, you were the glue that binded our family together. Always in our thoughts and I can still hear your voice in my head saying “ what a character” - Posted by: Paris Virkutis (Granddaughter ) on: Jan 25, 2018

  • Was thinking about you uncle Jim. You made an impact on me in my life, many many times I know you are there watching and smiling. You helped me get sober and have helped hundreds of others do the same. I'll always remember your caring way of explaining life's lessons to me, times at gundy lake in mid January, you would chop a hole in the ice and we would sauna, roll down the hill and jump in the lake. Following me in the canoe as I swan across the lake, then making camp only to have you circle back in the bush with a bear hide suit on and scare the witts outta me lol. Sailing on lake of the woods living off the land in the summer to meetings at the first step in st vital when I really needed them. Thanks for so much Uncle Jim. I will always cherish. - Posted by: Samuel Thorsteinson (Nefew ) on: Aug 22, 2015
