KJARTAN SVEINN (KEN) THORSTEINSON Peacefully on Saturday, March 15, 2003 at the Betel Home in Gimli, at the age of 92 years. Ken was predeceased by his beloved wife Sigurlin (Lena) parents, Jon and Rosa Thorsteinsson; brothers, Gunnsteinn (Gus), Kristjan (Chris), Johann (Joe). Dad will be missed by his boys, Claude and Dick; loving granddaughter Signy; special great-grandchildren, Erika and Carter; sister-in-law Ingibjorg; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Dad was born at Arborg, MB on June 17, 1910. The family lived in Arborg, Hecla, Selkirk, and Keewatin, ON. When Mom and Dad were first married they lived in Red Lake, ON and upon their return to Manitoba they made Riverton their lifelong home. Dad worked at many occupations, beginning as a truck driver at the age of 15 during the construction of the Trans Canada Highway in Ontario, helping build the cairn marking the Ontario / Manitoba border, working as an engineer with his dad and brothers on a Lake Winnipeg freighter which was built by his father and grandfather, pioneer boat builders on Lake Winnipeg, as a hoist operator at the Howie mine in Red Lake, owner of the Central Garage, Riverton Hardware and a Massy Harris dealer, started the Riverton Taxi, a Royal Mail contractor for many years, and finally a school bus driver. All through these years, Dad had a special interest in buying, fixing up and selling cars. Dads final years were spent at the Betel Home in Gimli. The family would like to thank all the Betel staff for their kindness and loving care. Cremation has taken place and a private memorial service will be held at a later date. Donations in Dads memory may be made to the Betel Home Foundation, Box 10, Gimli, MB R0C 1B0. Gilbart Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
