NOBLE BERNIE (BUN) VOLKMAN (1912 - 2003) Peacefully, in his sleep on May 25, 2003, with his family by his side, Bernie slipped away to join his beloved wife, Chris. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Left to mourn are his daughter, Joan, and his favourite son-in-law, Laurie Nowicki; his granddaughters, Jayne (Ray) and Linli (Warren) and special granddaughter dog, Zoe. Bernie was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Christian, and his brother, Jack. Bernie was a kind and generous soul who enjoyed life to the fullest right up to the end. In the earlier years he was a lifeguard, an earnest golfer, square dancer and bowler. He played trumpet in the the Shrine Khartum Temple Drum & Bugle Corps., was a member of the Scottish Rite and the Fort Garry Masonic Lodge No. 130 A.F.&A.M. for over 30 years. Bernie participated in the Shrine Circus until his 89th year. He was president of the Orioles Community Club for many years, a member of the Winnipeg Junior Chamber of Commerce and the YMCA. He worked 48 years for Nabisco Foods, starting at 17 on the loading dock and working up to Plant Manager. After retirement, he and Chris holidayed in the winter in Hawaii or Florida. He enjoyed curling in the 60 Plus Mens League at Rossmere Curling Club, insisting on always being an active participant, doing most of the sweeping. He also enjoyed puttering around his Winnipeg Beach cottage and at his familys cabin at Pickerel Lake, ON which, without his help and tutelage, would never have been built. Til the end he was exercising so that he would be able to attend the upcoming Bomber Season. He recently moved into Donwood Manor and was beginning to make friends. He enjoyed walking down the halls and saying "hello" to everyone, especially Mickey, a very special and caring person. A special thank you to Dr. Kevin Coates for his concern and kindness all these years. In keeping with Dads wishes, cremation has taken place. A graveside service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Friday, June 6 at Glen Eden Cemetery, 4477 Main St., (meet at front gate). After the service, we will gather in the Glen Eden Reception Centre. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations may be made to the Khartum Shrine Patient Transportation Fund, 1155 Wilkes Ave., Winnipeg, R3P 1B9. And when the time in this world comes to reach our journeys end, our angel walks beside us like a kind, familiar friend. And as we leave behind The only place weve ever known, we see our angels smile at last and hear "Youre home...youre home." THOMSON Funeral Chapels - 669 Broadway - 783-7211
