GAIL V. POUND With great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved mom, sister and auntie, Gail Vivianne Pound. Gail fought a courageous battle with cancer and departed this life with her family at her side on Tuesday, June 10, 2003 at the St. Boniface General Hospital. Gail will be missed and lovingly remembered by sons, Kevin and Keenan: sister "Sherry" with husband Marty, nephews, Kris and Shawn Jeffery of Winnipeg, and brothers, Garry, with wife Maggie Pound of Lethbridge, AB; and Eric, with wife Janice Pound of Hadishville, MB, nephew Kelly (and daughter Emma), niece Robyn (and daughter Samantha) and sister-in-law Alice Pound. Gail was predeceased by her parents, Ada and Gordon Pound, and her infant sister Linda. Gail was born in Russell, MB on July 19, 1945. She spent her childhood happily growing up on the family farm near Makaroff, MB. After graduation, she moved to Winnipeg and was employed at the old General Hospital and Municipal Hospital. Gail married and had two sons, raising them as a single parent. She worked relentlessly and attended evening courses in order to better provide for her family. Her continuing education and tireless work ethic brought her to the Human Resource Department at Riverview Health Care Centre where Gail continued in various capacities for almost 30 years before becoming its Department Director several years ago. Throughout her illness Gail continued working, demonstrating the notable pride, selflessness and commitment her co-workers had grow to expect before reluctantly retiring in April of this year. She loved her work and co-workers and having to retire was at times harder than managing the illness itself. Outside of work, Gail enjoyed the simple pleasures life had to offer. In younger years, she took extended camping trips with her family throughout Canada and the U.S., always finding fulfilment in the great outdoors and never shying away from an adventure. In later years, Gail liked to spend her summers out at Falcon Lake, attending family "get togethers", puttering around in her yard keeping her garden alive while visiting with the neighbours and, of course, spending time with her favourite friend, her cat KC. Though never liking to be the centre of attention, Gail was known by family and friends for her quiet, dry sense of humour and witty insight. She remained, to the end of her days, a support system for all, in particular, providing a guiding influence on her sons and helping them to find their path in life. Gail tackled any obstacles head on with highest level of determination and perseverance, never giving up on anything she started. Those who knew her will attest to her independence, stubbornness and tough exterior, those that knew her well will remember her with the gentle compassion and thoughtfulness she tried so hard to hide. She will be missed. The tide recedes but leaves behind Bright seashells in the sand. The sun goes down but gentle warmth Still lingers oer the land. The music stops but seems to echo on in sweet refrain For every thing that passes, beautiful memories remain. The family would like to thank the following Honorary Pallbearers: Nancy Steski, Berit Hack, Shareen Coates, Denny Kells, Ken Friesen, Jack and Phyllis Lenderbeck and Lorraine Sebastian. The family would also like to thank the healthcare staff from the St. Boniface Palliative Care Unit, Health Sciences Centre CancerCare and Riverview for all their support. A memorial service to celebrate Gails life will be held at Green Acres Funeral Chapel on Saturday, June 14 at 10:30 a.m. with Chaplain Glen Hurst presiding. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or your favourite charity would be appreciated. GREEN ACRES Funeral Home, Cemetery and Crematorium Hwy. #1 E. at Navin, 222-3241
