Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemorySTEPHEN GRAHAM PUTNAM Surrounded by his loving family, Steve died peacefully on July 26, 2003 after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife Margaret; daughter Helen; son Tom and wife Charmaine; son David; and grandchildren, Sarah, Maggie, Robin, Tavis, and Rachel; his brother Jim of Duncan, BC; and sisters, Carolyn Ellis of Sarnia, ON, and Mary Putnam of Winnipeg. He was predeceased by his sister Audrey Austin in December 2002. Steve was born in Fort William, ON on August 18, 1922. His family soon moved here and lived in Norwood where he attended school. After Grade 12 at United College, he joined the R.C.A.F. where he achieved his lifelong dream of learning to fly. Overseas, he was assigned to the R.A.F. Shot down, he spent nineteen months in a prisoner of war camp. Upon his return, he decided to work outdoors as a surveyor to help regain his health. After a year, he returned to United College and the University of Manitoba for a B.A. and B.Ed. Later, he attended McGill where he earned a M.Ed. in Geography. He taught in the Winnipeg One School Division, his last school being Kelvin High School. His passion for flying and aerial photography gave him much pleasure and afforded the opportunity to apply it extensively in the classroom. As a geographer, he loved to travel but still enjoyed his cottage at Ponemah. He was an enthusiastic member of the Western Canada Aviation Museum where he was a volunteer for over 25 years. Memorial service will be held at Westworth United Church Wednesday, July 30 at 2:00 p.m. Flowers gratefully declined. Donations may be made to the Western Canada Aviation Museum or a charity of your choice.
