SYDNEY SAMUEL SARBIT Born in 1912 in Jerusalem, Syd came to Selkirk at three years of age. He left high school to work in his parents store and became an extraordinary storekeeper, successful through a combination of hard work, creative enterprise and good nature. Syd was predeceased by his parents, Jacob and Goldie; his brothers, Sam and Nate; and his sister Sylvia. In 1995, Rita, his dear wife of 52 loving years, passed away after an extended illness. It is difficult to find words to express how much he missed her. Syd leaves a remarkable legacy from his work and service to the community. He had so many friends from the grocery store, from his involvement in the Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Clubs in Selkirk, from his days in baseball, hockey and bowling. Even so, what he was most proud of was his family. He leaves to grieve his death and to celebrate his life his sister Molly; his two children and five grandchildren: son Larry, his wife Harriet Berkal and their children, Sophie and Manny, son Bruce, his wife Celia and their children, Ari, Jared and Marti. Syd died peacefully, without pain, with his family nearby. He was still of sound mind, his sense of humour and good nature intact until the very end. He died with a sense of both resignation - that he was ready to go, and fulfilment - that he had lived a good life. We are grateful to Tuxedo Villas staff on Unit 2 for making Dad feel at home during his last few months. We are particularly thankful to Herma Dwyer, his friend and support, and to Maria Austria. Their special efforts gave Dad comfort and us peace of mind. Thinking of himself as "the luckiest man in the world," he was devoted to his loving wife, children and grandchildren, to his work, his community and his many causes. Our lives will be informed and inspired by his. We are better for having known Syd, for having been teased by him, for having been served by him, for having been loved by him. He was adored and appreciated and will always be remembered lovingly. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to charities committed to community enhancement.
