DIEGO BUETI May 18, 1925 - January 19, 2004 After a courageous battle with lung disease, with his family at his side, our father passed away on January 19, 2004 at the age of 78 years at the St. Boniface General Hospital. He leaves to mourn his beloved wife of 46 years, Antonietta; sons, Vincenzo (Liana), Francesco (Palmira) daughter Caterina; son Giuseppe; grandchildren, Antonietta and Domenica; brother Rocco (Gail) sisters, Filomena Bova, Angela Licandro (Francesco), Grazia Spezzano (Antonino) sisters-in-law, Giuseppina Bueti, Santina Albanese (Rocco), Angelina Cotroneo (Gino) brother-in-law Serafino Spezzano (Johanna) special friend Joe Newransky and numerous nieces and nephews and countless family and friends in Canada, Italy, the United States and Australia. He was predeceased by his beloved parents, Vincenzo and Caterina and his beloved brother Giuseppe. Diego was born May 18, 1925 in San Roberto, Reggio Calabria, Italy, the third of six children. He was a proud, generous and hardworking family man. In 1950 he left his home to work as a coal miner in Belgium for four years; sending half his earnings to his father to support his family. Although the work was hard and dangerous, our father loved the years he spent in Belgium. In August 1954 he immigrated to Canada to join his brother Giuseppe in Winnipeg. They were joined by their brother Rocco in 1955 and together the three brothers worked for CN Railway for over 30 years. Our father retired in 1986, as a machinist, after 32 years of service. In 1957, Diego married our mother Antonietta and together they raised four children who were his pride and joy. His greatest love in life was his family, which not only included his wife and children but also his parents, brothers, sisters and their children. As members of the Bueti and Spezzano families immigrated to Winnipeg they would stay in our fathers home at 516 Langside Street until they were able to establish themselves. Diegos relationship with his brothers Giuseppe and Rocco was especially close. They were inseparable; meeting regularly with friends at the local Italian cafes for coffee and the occasional game of cards. Our father appreciated the importance of a university education and encouraged his children to pursue professional careers. He took pride in the fact that his children attained professional degrees in accounting, law, pharmacy and medicine. He was also very proud of the many accomplishments of his nieces and nephews in the professions and in business. Diego had a special gift for languages. In addition to Italian and English, he learned to speak French while working in Belgium and Ukrainian, Polish and some Russian while working at CN Railway. He particularly loved to speak to people in their native tongue be it Ukrainian, Russian or Polish whenever the opportunity arose. Diego had two hobbies that he loved passionately; gardening and wine making. He spent many hours every summer carefully pruning and watering his garden so it would flourish. Every fall for over 40 years he would carefully select his grapes and make fine red wine. The family wishes to thank Dr. Bshouty, Dr. Johnston, Dr. Drobot, Father Roland Lanoie as well as all the staff on both 5A and 5B Medicine with special thanks to staff member Howard ("Micuzzo"). In addition, we wish to thank the many family members and friends who visited and provided comfort and support to our father and our family. The pallbearers will be Joe Newransky, Pino Licandro, Paul Bueti, Pat Albanese, Frank Spezzano and Vince Spezzano. Prayers were held on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 at 7:00 p.m. in the Holy Rosary Church, 510 River Avenue. Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Thursday, January 22, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. also in Holy Rosary Church with Fr. Vincent de Paul Tchaoule presiding at the Eucharist and entombment to follow at the Waverley Memorial Gardens, 1501 Waverley St. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made to the Manitoba Lung Association, 629 McDermot Avenue, R3A 1P6 (774-5501).
