ALEXANDER (SANDY) BEATTIE February 5, 1930 - January 21, 2004 Peacefully on January 21, 2004 at the St. Boniface Hospital, Sandy passed away. Born in Cults, Aberdeen, Scotland Sandy was a Postman until June 1957 when he immigrated to Winnipeg. He worked as a labourer at the T. Eaton Co., Alexander warehouse until he joined the Winnipeg City Police in September 1958 and eventually attained the rank of Detective. He resigned from the Police in June 1972 to become Co-owner of the Ryall Hotel in Carman, MB. Sandy returned to Winnipeg in June 1974 to work with the Manitoba Government Labour Department Standards Division where he remained until his retirement in 1992. Retirement did not last long and Sandy started working again in August 1994 when he took a part time job with the Tax Court of Canada as Court Registrar. He had only recently enjoyed a lovely retirement party in his honour from the staff at the court office. While Sandy was a policeman, he also became a piper. He played with the Winnipeg Police Pipe Band, the Air Force Pipe Band and The Khartum Temple Shrine Pipe Band Unit. Sandy was President of the Shrine Band in 1982 and Pipe Major 1988-1991. Sandy was also a member of the Queens Own Cameron Highlanders from 1963-1985. the last five years of which he was the Pipe Major. Sandy was a member of the Masonic Lodge #155 A.F. & A.M. in Carman, MB, and of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonary. Sandy was also a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #4 St. James and acted as their Duty Piper. Sandy was predeceased by his sister Betty and brother-in-law Donald Yeats in Scotland. He is survived by his daughter Anne and son-in-law Mark Gray and his three grandchildren, Kelsey, Alanna and Emily. Also by his dear friend and companion Lynda Kalupar and her family. Sandy also leaves his brothers, Jim (Elspit) Beattie and Charlie (Carol) Beattie, and his sister Margaret (Ali) Alexander in Scotland, as well as many nieces and nephews in Scotland. Funeral services will be held at Thomson Funeral Chapels, 669 Broadway (at Sherbrook) at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 27, 2004. Honorary Pallbearers will be Ron and Allan Kalupar, Ray Bell, Cliff Cooke, Geof Warener and Wayne Leach.
