LIEVE BRECKMAN Passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 21, 2004 at Third Crossing Manor, Gladstone, Lieve Breckman, aged 102 years. Lieve was born on May 10, 1902 at her parents farm in the Marshland area in Manitoba, where her parents had settled after emigrating from Iceland. As a teenager, Lieve enjoyed all outdoor activities, especially riding her favourite horse "Frank", who lived for many years. At 16 she took over the Grass River post office for two years under her fathers supervision. At 18 she travelled to Indiana, where she enrolled in a business course, then attended Manchester College, and later enrolled at Dominion Business College in Winnipeg for a refresher course. She worked for Great West Sadlery in Winnipeg from 1929 until 1951. She was then hired as Secretary Treasurer for Outlook School Unit in Saskatchewan from 1952 until 1972, residing in Outlook and Moosomin. Lieve retired to Gladstone in 1979, where she took pleasure in living in her own home and tending her garden until she moved to 110 Legion Place in 1989. From there Lieve moved to the care home. A special thanks to the staff at Third Crossing Manor for the care and comfort they provided for Lieve during the years that she lived there. Lieve will be remembered as an independent person who lived her life with an enthusiasm that was reflected in her paintings, her beautiful flower garden, and her love of dancing. Lieve attended square dancing until she was in her 90s. She was very proud of her Icelandic heritage and made four different trips to Iceland, touring and visiting relatives. Lieve was predeceased by her parents, Albert Freeman and Anna Karolina; brothers, Chris and Eddy; an infant brother who passed away on the trip from Iceland; sister Bertha Stewart; sister-in-law Joan; and a niece Linda Breckman in Iceland. Lieve is survived by many nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 24 at 2:00 p.m. at the Gladstone United Church, Gladstone, MB. Interment will follow in the Gladstone Cemetery. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to a charity of ones choice. Clarkes Funeral Home, Gladstone in care of arrangements. 204-385-2274.
