Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemorySAM HERSHFIELD Sam Hershfield born June 18, 1912, passed away peacefully with family at his side on January 9, 2005. Sam will be greatly missed by his loving and devoted wife of 61 years Vera; his sons, Neil and Larry; his daughter-in-law Janet; his grandchildren, Daniel, Evan, Zachary and Gabriel; his nieces, Sheila and Joanne, and his many other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his brother Dr. Louis Hershfield; sister-in-law Molly; his sister Sarah Miller, and so many of his friends. The family would like to thank the staffs of Home Care and Charleswood Care Centre for their help during his last years. Sam served as a navigator in the RCAF and returned to Winnipeg after the war to spend a long career as a pharmacist. Sam's Main Drugs Limited may have been in the poorest of neighbourhoods, but it was the richest community of all. It was populated by legions of regulars from all walks of life, most with nicknames created by Sam, all with various roles in the community and the business of the store. It was a drug store. And it was a social club. And it was a social service agency without funding, title, or structure, where Sam was generous with his time, his money, and his willingness to help those in need. Sam had a profound love for his family and took great pleasure throughout his life in the company of others. The common thread running through the passions of his life, including cards, curling, and tennis, was that they could not be done alone. Late into his illness, Sam was still enjoying the companionship of friends, and especially the frequent visits of his sons and their families. A service was held January 10 at the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue. Shiva is being observed at the family home. In lieu of flowers, donations to the charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
