He was born on May 1, 1928, the youngest son of Ethel and Bernie Strachan of Pope. He received his education in Oakner after which he helped his Dad on the farm, worked a year in Wawa, ON, and later on the TransCanada Pipeline. In 1957, he married Jean Sunley of Decker. They farmed on the Strachan homestead until 1984 when they relocated to Hamiota. Garth continued farming with his sons until poor health forced his retirement. Garth was an avid sportsman. He enjoyed fishing, baseball, hockey, golf, and later, he was highly successful as a curler. His curling accomplishments included winning the Manitoba title in both Senior and Masters competition and a second place finish in the Canadian Senior's championship in New Brunswick. He was a very generous and kind man. His family and good friends were very important to him and he was very proud to be able to farm along side his sons. He believed in fairness and helping others in times of need. He served terms as a director on the Hamiota Co-op board and Agricultural Society. For many years, he served as drawmaster at local bonspiels and was a tireless worker at the rink. He was named an Honorary Life Member of the Manitoba Curling Association in 1994 and was presented the MCA Curler of Distinction Award in 2002. He was also named a Life Member of the Agricultural Society. Garth leaves to mourn his wife Jean of 47 years; sons, Brent (Wanda), Dallas (Nancy); special niece Lynda (Coady); grandchildren, Sheldon (Chrystal) and Katie Strachan, Tyler (Lindsay) and Joel Strachan, Justice, Stashan, Tannaysia, and Kighe Coady.
