FLORA MARY KOBRINSKY Flora Mary Kobrinsky Army Nurse, Humanitarian A resident of the Claremont and Upland area in California for nearly 45 years, Flora Mary Kobrinsky died of cancer at her most recent home, in Westlake Village, California on September 22, 2005. She was 87 years old. The daughter of Athanase Lacroix and Sarah McPhee. Flora was born on a farm in Saskatchewan. She had six sisters and one brother. Flora graduated from nursing school at St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg in 1939. She later volunteered to join the nursing corps of the Canadian Army, where she served as a lieutenant in England and other parts of Europe during The Second World War. She married medical officer, Dr. Samuel Kobrinsky in 1945, and together with their four children, they immigrated to California in 1959, where Dr. Kobrinsky worked as an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist with Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Fontana, California. Flora was active in community service organizations, helping initiate classes for stroke victims, volunteering her time at the Steelworkers Oldtimers Foundation and working with Meals on Wheels. Along with her husband, she was a great lover of travel, music, nature and bird watching. Family members say she will always be remembered for her kindness, generosity and especially for her sharp wit and sense of humour, which brought smiles and laughter wherever she went. Flora was predeceased by a son, Jonathan and a grandson, Alexander. She is survived by her eldest son, Charles Kobrinsky; by her son and daughter-in-law, Leonard and Hilary Kobrinsky; by her daughter and son-in-law, Andrea Kobrinsky-Alday and Alex Alday; by her five grandchildren, and also by her sisters, Agnes Mingle, Jean Weeks and Madeline Wilbur.
