Irena is lovingly remembered by her family: daughters, Lubow Gillies (Gary) of Winnipeg and Dr. Anna Shymkiw (Stephen Harop) of Sydney, Australia; cousins, nieces and nephews in Canada, USA and Ukraine. She was predeceased by her husband Ivan, and parents, Mykhajlo and Liuba Maksymiuk. Irena was born in Chernylytsia, Ukraine, January 11, 1926, and immigrated to Canada in 1951. She had a passion for Ukrainian embroidery and folk art of Hutsul'shchyna, the beautiful mountainous region of her childhood. Irena will be remembered as a loving, kind and humble woman, who gave of herself to help others. The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to the nursing staff, Units 4 and 5, at Seven Oaks Hospital for their kindness and compassionate care. Respecting Irena's wishes, Requiem was sung on Thursday, October 13 with Right Reverend Father Michael Pawlyshyn, Emeritus and Reverend Cornell Zubritsky officiating in the presence of the immediate family. Interment followed at Brookside Cemetery.
