SYLVIA MARKEL (nee ISRAELS) With deep sadness we announce the passing of Sylvia Markel on October 20, 2005 at the age of 94 years. She was predeceased by her first husband Joseph Sier; her second husband Merk Markel; her four brothers, Monty, Max, Sydney and Lyonel Israels. She will be missed by her stepson Frank Markel (Flora); sister-in-law Esther Israels; nieces and nephews, Hester and Guy Kroft, Renee and Milton Bogoch, Barbara Johnstone, Linda and Ron Sanderson, Carla and Ben Levinson, Sheri Israels and Geoffrey Butcher, Sara Israels and Dan Blankstein, and many cousins, great nieces and great nephews. Sylvia was born in Winnipeg on February 2, 1911 and grew up in Sedley SK where she attended the elementary and high school under the auspices of the Order of the Grey Nuns. She credited the dedicated Nuns for providing a superior education to the children of this small rural community. After moving to Winnipeg in 1946, she was involved with a number of Jewish volunteer organizations and worked in the administration office of the Winnipeg Children's Hospital. Sylvia was an enthusiastic participant in sports activities including skating, curling and tennis. She remained active and independent until a few months before her death. Sylvia was devoted to her four brothers and their families. She supported her two younger brothers through university and medical school. She provided wise council to the young members of her extended family and took an active interest in their education and careers. A graveside service was held at the Shaarey Zedek Cemetery on October 23, 2005. Pallbearers were Frank Markel, Dan Blankstein, Jonathan Kroft, David Kroft, Morley Hoffman and Jeffrey Morry. The family would like to thank the members of the Palliative Care Program and the staff at Riverview Health Centre and St. Boniface Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Children's Hospital Foundation of Manitoba, CE501-840 Sherbrook St.
