GRACE HIRT ** CHANGE IN TIME OF SERVICE ** Peacefully, with family at her side, Grace Hirt (nee Winstanley), passed away on December 22, 2005. Left to cherish her memory are sisters-in-law, Elsie Schan and Mary Winstanley, as well as many nieces and nephews and their families. Grace was predeceased by her loving husband of 58 years, Peter Hirt; her parents, Thomas and Catherine Winstanley; brothers, Jim Winstanley, Tom Winstanley and Jack Winstanley; sisters, Bette Winstanley and Adelaide Winstanley; and brother-in-law Otto Schan. Grace was born on February 17, 1921 in Glasgow, Scotland. During the Second World War she was a member of the Royal Air Force, L.A.C.W. From 1940 to 1945 she drove ambulances in England while serving her country. She met Peter during the war and they were married on June 3, 1946. She travelled to Canada alone, reuniting with Peter in Winnipeg in September 1946. Grace worked for many years at the Eaton's downtown store in the fur department. This was rare for a woman of her generation, but she rose to the challenge becoming a very successful sales person. Grace and Peter travelled extensively through Europe, Mexico and Phoenix. She lived in Winnipeg most of her married life, retiring in Lester Beach and wintering in Phoenix. Grace had a strong independent spirit and a wonderful sense of style. Her bonny blue eyes, quick wit and smile will long be remembered. Thank you to the staff of Observation and the 4th floor at the Victoria Hospital for their compassion. Special thank you to Dr. Sheila Domkey and the wonderful staff of the Golden Door Nursing Home for their kind care of Gracie . Cremation has taken place. Funeral mass will be held on Saturday, January 14 at 12:30 p.m. at St Anthony's of Padua Church, 250 Burrin Ave. Inurnment to follow at Holy Ghost Cemetery. Rest in peace Auntie Grace.
