Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOSEPH PETER MICHAEL BORESKIE Joseph Peter Michael Boreskie died November 11, 2006, at the Altona Hospital following a lengthy illness. Joseph is survived by his children, Michael, Mark (Sue), Mary and Tom, and his grandchildren, Patrick and Kevin. He was predeceased by his wife Donalda; his father William; mother Finola; brother John and sister Florence. He was born on April 22, 1922, in Brandon, MB, where he received his early education. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Manitoba's Brandon College in 1942. Following a year's study in chemistry at the University of Toronto, he entered the University of Manitoba's Faculty of Medicine in 1943 and received his Doctorate in Medicine in 1948. He opened a medical practice in Altona, MB, in 1948 and, following his marriage in 1949, moved to Gretna, MB, where he practiced as a family physician until his retirement in 1995. He became a member of the College of Family Physicians of Canada in 1961 and for many years served on the executive of the Manitoba chapter, chairing its Credentials Committee and serving as Vice-President in 1973 - 1974. He received the college's Postgraduate Study Award in 1969, was awarded a fellowship in family medicine in 1975 and became a life member of the college in 1992. He was also appointed a Senior Member of the Canadian Medical Association in 1992 for his contribution to the profession and that same year was presented with the Commemorative Medal for the 125th Anniversary of Confederation in recognition of his contribution to his community. Funeral mass will be held at St. Ignatius Roman Catholic Church, corner of Corydon Avenue and Stafford Street in Winnipeg, on Thursday, November 16 at 1:00 p.m. Interment will take place in Winnipeg; a reception will be held at the church immediately following mass. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Joseph P. Boreskie Award in Medicine, c/o The University of Manitoba, Department of Development, 179 Extended Education Complex, Winnipeg, MB R3T 2N2.
