DR. HAROLD (HAL) WILLIAM BOTTOMLEY 1918 - 2007 The children of Dr. Harold (Hal) William Bottomley sadly announce that he passed away January 6, 2007, at the Douglas Fir Hospice Unit of the Cottonwoods Care Facility in Kelowna, BC at the age of 88. Dad was born in Saskatoon, SK and always held a passion for the prairie landscape and its people. After receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, he earned his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Manitoba in 1943. He married our mother, Joan Audrey White in Medicine Hat, AB, in 1944. Mum passed away in 1998. Dad served in the Army Medical Corps during the Second World War in both Italy and Holland in 1944 and 1945. Following his return to Canada in 1945, he joined the Winnipeg Clinic where he practised in Allergy and Internal Medicine until his retirement in 1983. He earned a Specialist Certificate in Internal Medicine from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 1949, was elected a Fellow of the American College of Physicians in 1959 and became a Fellow of the Canadian Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology in 1976. Dad and Mum lived in Winnipeg until 1987 when they relocated to Kelowna. Dad was the consummate gentle healer; he lived his life with compassion and curiosity, humour and humility, and elegance and intelligence. As he pointed out, a man is what he remembers. In turn his significance and influence are determined by the memories he creates in other people through his manner, his example, or his creative works. That is what he taught us, and that is his legacy to all who knew him. Predeceased by his wife Joan; his brother Ronald, and his sister Beryl, he leaves to grieve, and to celebrate his life, four children, two granddaughters, four grandsons, five great-grandchildren and many other family and friends. Dad requested cremation and no memorial service. A private interment at Kelowna Memorial Park Cemetery next to our Mum, and a celebration of his life, will be held this spring. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Holding Hands for Hospice Campaign of the Central Okanagan Hospice Association, 202 - 1456 St. Paul Street, Kelowna, BC V1Y 2E6 would be gratefully appreciated. www.kelownahospice.com http://www.kelownahospice.com/
