CHARLES (CHARLIE) BOYCE With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Charles (Charlie) Boyce on Tuesday, September 25, 2007 at St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg, MB. Charlie was born August 8, 1918 to parents Charles and Bessie (nee Finkleman) Ludzker. Charles Ludzker died in Prince Albert, SK, before Charlie was born. Bessie moved to Winnipeg after Charlie's birth and remarried Joseph Hillier. Charlie grew up in the north-end of Winnipeg, attending Machray and Norquay Schools, and then St. John's High School. He attended Dominion Business College in 1935 to 1936. An industrious spirit led him to the rails to seek work during the Depression. Charlie served in the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1942 to 1946, and re-enlisted in 1952. Charlie achieved the rank of corporal in 15 years of military service. He served in England, India, Sri Lanka, Morocco, Monaco, Italy and France. While in Bombay, he met the last Viceroy of India, the Lord Mountbatten. Charlie's career outside the military included business administration and work with the Department of Justice. Charlie was motivated by his inherent and spontaneous generosity. Upon retirement he devoted much of his time to volunteer organizations such as Meals-on-Wheels, Combined Jewish Appeal, B'nai Brith and the Hebrew University. Charlie was an involved member of the General Monash Legion #115. Many individuals and immigrant families benefited from his benevolence. A proud Zionist, Charlie made many journeys to Israel among his other world travels. In a gesture he described as thinking with his heart,' he commissioned the planting of a grove of 2500 trees in Israel at Canada Park. A God-loving man, Charlie was a founding member of Temple Shalom in Winnipeg. Unselfish and genuinely kind, he lived his belief that if you love God, you love your fellow man. Nearly everyone who met Charlie was enchanted by his wit and charm. His pride and joy were his family. Charlie was especially grateful for his golden years spent with his sister Lillian, his daughter Geraldine and sons, Richard and Kenny. He is also survived by Harold Boyce, Sheila Lambert, Joel Sarbit their families and numerous nieces and nephews. Charlie was predeceased by his sister Ruthie Hillier, his brother David Theodore Boyce, his wife Patricia, his daughter Doreen Boyce and son Sidney Cramer. A graveside service will be held at Shaarey Zedek Cemetery, 230 Armstrong Avenue, directly across from Kildonan Park on Wednesday, September 26, 2007 at 1:30 p.m. Funeral arrangements by Chesed Shel Emes. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to Temple Shalom and Winnipeg Harvest Food Bank. The Boyce family expresses sincere gratitude to Alex Rosales, Dr. Jack Rusen, the St. Boniface Hospital, Home Care, Cantor Len Udow, the General Monash Honour Guard and countless others who offered their kindness and support.
