Mel is survived by Audrey, his loving wife of 59 years; son Cavin; daughter Claire; brother Paul and sister-in-law Sophie; brother-in-law Walter, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Mel is predeceased by his father and mother, Steve and Francis; his brother Bill; and sisters, Lena and Katie. Mel was born in Oakburn, Manitoba on January 20, 1922 and completed his high school education in Shoal Lake, Manitoba. He then entered Teacher's College in 1939. However, before he completed the year-long course, he joined the RCAF and served from 1940 to 1943. Upon his discharge from the RCAF, he returned to the teaching profession where he happily remained for 43 years and spent 25 of those years as the Principal of Hampstead School. While building a career as a teacher and school administrator, he also earned a B.A. and then a B.Ed. from the University of Manitoba. His love for travel and adventure that began as a young man, extended into family life when his children were young and continued well into his retirement. Mel also had a deep affection for the cottage at Lac Lu that he and Audrey owned and nurtured for 30 years. Mel and Audrey enjoyed square dancing and attending theatre and other cultural events. Mel was also an avid reader and in his later years developed a fondness for playing cards with his friends in the apartment community in which he lived. Mel was a devoted and loving husband, father and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew him. The warmth, kindness, unconditional acceptance and gentle humour he radiated into this world will live on as his legacy. The Mass and memorial service will take place on Thursday, March 18, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Gerard's Church, 45 Foster St. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, friends and relatives are invited to make a donation to a charity of their choice in memory of Mel.
