HELEN TURMAN (nee TACZYNSKI) April 23, 1916 - November 26, 2011 Peacefully on Saturday, November 26, 2011 Helen passed away at the honourable age of 95. Helen is survived by her sons Tony Turman, Dennis Turman (Carol), daughter-in-law Alice Turman, sister Nellie Baker, grandchildren Tannis (Roger), Mark (Shelby), David (Bev), Jerry (Vicki), Randy, Roseanne, Michael, Brent (Wendy), Kim (Tony), Shaelynn, Tyla, and numerous great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. Helen was predeceased by her husband Alexander, brothers Mike, Frank, and Ralph, son Rudy Turman, daughter Alice Pagee, son-in-law Elmer Pagee, and daughter-in-law Shirley Turman. Helen was born on April 23, 1916 and spent many years on the farm in the Byng area. She later married Alexander Turman and raised their family of Rudy, Alice, Tony and Dennis on the Turman homestead. Helen spent her working years as a head cook at CFS Gypsumville. Her love for cooking shone through in her food, as there were always extra guests around the table for a good Ukrainian meal at the Turman household. Nobody could make a perogy like Baba could! When Helen wasn't in the kitchen, she was outside harvesting the garden, or just sitting on the deck enjoying nature. Baba was very proud of her Ukrainian culture and looked forward to attending Dauphin's Ukrainian Festival every year. She also enjoyed a good polka at Malanka, and teaching her grandchildren how to decorate Pysanka (Easter Eggs). Saturday nights you would find her listening to polka party. Helen was a strong NDP member, and spent many years canvassing with the local candidates. She was very honoured to have gone with her brother Mike to have lunch with the Queen on her visit to Winnipeg, and also went with Mike to see the Pope on his visit to Birds Hill Park. A private graveside service will be taking place in the St. Martin Cemetery, with Pastor Bill Watson officiating. Helen's family wishes to thank the wonderful nurses and staff at Tuxedo Villa Care Home as well as the nurses and staff of 3-North at Grace General Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Helen's name to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation Inc., 675 McDermot Ave., Room ON1160 Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9, in honour of her family members who have been affected by Cancer.
