Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMARY-ANNE ALICE COOK Peacefully with family by her side, on December 17, 2011 at the Lakeshore General Hospital in Ashern, MB, Mary-Anne Alice Cook, aged 78 years, passed away. She is survived by her husband John; son Steven (Riane); daughters Joanne and Carole-Anne; grandchildren, Vicki, Bailey, Amanda, Michael, Jarred and Jesse; great-grandchildren Jordan, Brooklyn, Ashton and Hayden; along with other family members and friends. Mom is predeceased by her parents Joe and Mary McKelvey; brothers Richard and Melvin, and her daughter Linda. Mom was born on February 16, 1933 in Ashern, MB and was raised on the farm. She lived in Ashern all her life and moved off the farm in 1968. Mom worked on the farm full time and had also been the custodian for the Ashern Central School. In 1994, she retired but continued to hobby farm. She had such a gentle nature that allowed her to move very easily amongst her animals. Mom had such an affinity with her animals and will be missed especially by her dog Cooper. Mom loved to play bingo, being outdoors and had an amazing garden that she tended with care and canned the fruits of her labour. Family was very important to her and just made her so happy to be with them. In keeping with mom's wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no formal service held. A private family gathering will be held at a later date. The family wishes to thank Dr. Faltas, the nurses and staff of the Lakeshore General Hospital in Ashern, especially to nurse Marco for the extra special care he gave to Mom, and to Mandy Gall and the Home Care team. Also thanks to Aunt Nettie for all the many visits and love she showed to our Mom and family. In lieu of flowers, Mom would prefer you be kind to your four-legged friends. We knew that Mary was sick but had been told that she would last several months. We heard thru the grapevine that she had passed away in December and it was quite a shock. My memories of Aunty Mary always involved the farm, animals and work. She was the hardest working woman I ever knew. She knew how to have fun though too and had the greatest giggle! She was so small in stature but could hold her own against whatever or whoever she had to! I loved spending time with her at her farm and I believe that my own love of animals probably comes from her. I remember my Dad telling me once that when Aunty Mary needed new cupboards at the farm she just went ahead and built them herself using a cross cut saw. I hugley admired that quality in her and wish that I could tell her that while I have my own cross cut saw I never actually used it to build cupboards. Sadly after my Dad passed away we seemed to lose touch with that side of the family. The exception was a visit to the Lodge from my cousin Linda. We had a great time together and strangely enough she told me that I reminded her of her Mom. I was honoured and touched. It was in relation to racing Quads and tractors, but still..... Aunty Mary was absolutely one of a kind and I will make sure to tell my kids just how amazing she was! - Posted by: Joan Forbes (Niece (Richard's daughter)) on: Feb 12, 2012

Dear Family: We were saddened to hear of Mary's death. She was a wonderful woman and hard worker. I haven't had the opportunity of seeing her for many years, however, I have such warm memories of visiting Mary, Joe, Little Mary, Richard and Mel at the farm when I was a child. What fun we had together! We met again when David and I married and honeymooned across Canada in 1965 and stayed with Grand-dad and Annie. We also visited with your parents. Mary will be missed. Our love and condolances to all. Donna Montgomery - Posted by: Donna and David Montgomery (Cousin (Pearl's daughter)) on: Dec 23, 2011
