GERRY LEGER April 23, 1950 - December 19, 2011 It is with great sadness that we tell you of Gerry's passing. He will be forever missed by his wife Maureen Murphy and his Murphy family, his sister Lorraine Gunderson and husband Tom, his niece Tracy Monro Moran (Doug) and their children Madeline and Jack, and his nephew Rick Monro (Joy) and children Ava, Isaac and Marilee. Gerry worked in the entertainment business for most of his life beginning as the lighting and audio technician for Sugar n' Spice . As Manager of the Rental Division of Oakwood Audio, he co-ordinated audio for the visits of Pope John Paul II, Queen Elizabeth and Mother Teresa to our city. He worked with Bob Hope, B. B. King, Rick Nelson and Bobby Vinton, to name a few. One of his favourite gigs was supplying and operating audio for his many friends at Festival du Voyageur. Gerry also worked The Calgary Stampede for years and supplied and operated audio for the closing ceremonies of the XV Olympic Winter Games in Calgary. After leaving Oakwood, Gerry was the audio technician for the Olympic Truck / CBC Television Winnipeg. He travelled with CBC to Japan for the XVIII Winter Olympics in Nagano. He also did Front Page Challenge and Hockey Night in Canada. Gerry grew up in Fort Rouge across the street from his lifelong friend John MacInnes. They met when Gerry was four and their friendship never waned. Throughout his life Gerry made many friends and kept in touch with them as best he could. Maureen would like to thank Jeff Hirsch, Sheryl Rosenberg, Lynne Richardson, Lynne Craig, Ian and Joan Sutherland, Ron and Carol Paley, Glen and Susan Powell, John Hildebrand, Bob Holliday, Jim Kale, Bob Knoll, Roy and Bette Vance, Keith Bryant and our dear friend Father Robbie McDougall for their support and caring. To his many friends, you know who you are, he talked about and thought about you often and he loved you. Cremation has taken place. Gerry will be interred at St. Margaret's Roman Catholic Church in St. Andrews, Manitoba this spring. A gathering of those able to come will take place at that time. Our humble gratitude to Dr. Rick Lindenschmidt, Bev Grand and Dr. Ruth Simkin. Also, a warm thank you to Sharon Mendyk, Kris Langlois, Emerald Malagus and Sandy Milner of the Interlake Regional Health Authority. Your support and guidance over the past months made a very difficult time easier to bear. Rest in Peace Leggo. We'll miss your dimpled smile. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements. www.gilbartfuneralhome.com

Condolences & Memories (14 entries)

  • Just came across this quite by accident so hopefully my condolences will still reach you Maureen. My fondest high school memories are of hanging out at the Murphys', both in St. Boniface and on Grosvenor. Like Gerry, all of us were in love with one (or all) of you at one time. - Posted by: Brian Treleaven (Friend) on: Mar 25, 2013

  • I first met Gerry at St. Pauls in grade 9. I remember short hair, big feet and the faint hint of a mustache. In the summers I would hitchhike from Fort Garry to Fort Rouge, meet Gerry and we would walk to St. Boniface to the Murphy's. Maureen, Gerry was in love with you when he was 14 and there was no doubt in his mind that the two of you would be together. I'm glad you had so many years together. My condolences Maureen. Please take care. - Posted by: Terry Bradshaw (Friend ) on: Jul 22, 2012

  • I just heard the sad news today from a mutual friend. I first met Gerry at St. Paul's High School. He was my first friend. I lost touch after moving to California but I never forgot about him. His passing brings back memories of his warm and gregarious nature. True friend. - Posted by: brett clark (old / old friend of both Gerry and Maureen) on: Mar 07, 2012

  • Legs, one of the greatest "kooksters" I ever knew! So many great memories - The Masterbatters, Festival du Voyageur, Trivial Pursuit at the Press Club, the Norwood, etc. – we had such fun and I’m so lucky to have known him! To Murph and all the family, my thoughts are with you. - Posted by: Souze (Friend) on: Dec 27, 2011

  • Gerry believed in having fun and being nice to one another. He had a cheery countenance and genuinely cared for the people he knew - he always had real concern for all of them and wished them the best. • One of the most personable persons I ever met at the Winnipeg Press Club. Gerry was never pretentious, just an all round great guy who loved life and Maureen. A deep loss to the world. My condolences to Maureen. - Posted by: Shep (acquaintance) on: Dec 25, 2011
