BRYNJOLFUR (BINNIE) HELGI SIGURGEIRSON March 1, 1929 - January 3, 2012 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our brother and uncle, Binnie Sigurgeirson at the age of 82. Binnie was born and raised on the shores of his beloved Hecla Island. He began his career working closely with his father Helgi Sigurgeirson and uncle Dodi logging and commercial fishing on Lake Winnipeg until it's closing due to mercury levels. Binnie began working for Parks with a gravel tandem during the development of Hecla Provincial Park and Golf Course. Binnie spent three seasons driving truck with his nephew Johnny Austfjord in the Northwest Territories. He leased the homestead to continue commercial fishing when the lake re-opened until his retirement. Shortly after, the revitalization of Hecla Village brought all the families back which gave Binnie much joy. Binnie served as unofficial Hecla ambassador to many Icelandic visitors and other tourists and completed his passion of a Tool Museum in the old ice house previously owned by Binnie and Helgi. During this time Binnie took care of his parents, Helgi and Emma and moved to Gimli to be closer to the hospital until their passing. Binnie is survived by his sisters, Wilma Austfjord of Gimli, Kristine Stevens of BC, Gladys (Raymond) Kjartanson and Marge Hurst both of Winnipeg. Binnie's two nephews Brian and Johnny were with him at his time of passing. Funeral services will be held at the Hecla Lutheran Church on Monday, January 9, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. with a viewing one hour prior to service with Pastor Jane Zinken officiating. Coffee will follow at the Hecla Community Hall after service. Cremation will follow and a summer interment will be announced at a later date.
