MARIA SVALING (nee SCHAEFER) It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Maria Svaling on Thursday, January 5, 2012 at the Riverview Health Centre at the age of 80 years. She is survived by daughters, Debbie (Bruce), Linda and Margaret; and grand-daughters, Kristin (Michael) and Raquel. Maria was predeceased by her husband Joseph in 2006. Maria was born in Langendiebach, Germany to a large family, and came to Winnipeg in 1954 as a young woman to start a new life for herself. It was there that she met her husband, Joseph, and together they raised a family of three girls in Windsor Park. She enjoyed close friendships with many of her wonderful neighbours, and was a longtime member of the Windsor Park United Church Women's Group. Mom was a fabulous homemaker and took great pride in her home and yard. She was extremely accomplished at sewing and knitting and made truly beautiful things. Mom and Dad enjoyed visiting family throughout the world, and travelled to Germany, Hawaii and throughout Canada and the USA. They always had a good time, and came back with many stories to tell. Mom loved to spend time with her sisters and brothers in Germany and the States. Mom had a very special relationship with her granddaughters, Kristin and Raquel. They loved their Omi and will miss her forever. A celebration of Maria's life will be held on Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at 3:00 p.m. in the Coutu Funeral Chapel, 680 Archibald Street The family would like to thank the staff of CD4 at Riverview Health Centre for the care and compassion shown to Mom and our family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Maria's name to the Alzheimer's Society of Manitoba, 10-120 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2. The Coutu Family in care of arrangements: E.J. COUTU CO. Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • I only got to know Maria in the last years of her life but even through the limiting layers of her memory loss I could still sense her quiet dignity and strong spirit. Near the end of her life her beautiful smile was not often seen so it was with great pleasure that I read of the life time of smiles and pleasure that she and her creative gifts brought to those closest to her. May the wonderful and warm memories of her faithful love bring comfort to her family and friends who now grieve her passing. Maria is now smiling again and watching over those she loved. - Posted by: Tim Frymire (Chaplain at Riverview) on: Jan 12, 2012
