ALECK BABALUK June 19, 1919 - January 7, 2012 It is with great sadness that we announce Aleck's passing, peacefully in his sleep, at St. Boniface Hospital. Aleck was predeceased by his beloved wife of 64 years, Stella, on December 16, 2011. He is survived by sons and daughters-in-law: John and Shirley, Gary and Norine, Dan and Janet; grandsons Marc and Neil and fiancée Pat; sister Annette; sisters-in-law Kay and Rose; brother-in-law Henry (Florence), and nieces and nephews. Born and raised near Rossburn, MB, Aleck moved to Winnipeg after high school. During the Second World War he served in the R.C.A.F. as a radio technician, stationed in England and Scotland. On his return to Winnipeg, Aleck met Stella and they were married in 1947. They soon moved to St. Andrews where they raised their family and became a part of the community. Aleck served on the St. Andrews School Board and was part of the group instrumental in getting the new St. Andrews School built in the 1960s. He was also a founding member of St. Andrews Community Club. Aleck was a master electrician for over 30 years, retiring in 1984. He was an active member of Local 2085 (formerly 435) of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, serving a term as president. He was also a charter member of the Ukrainian Canadian Veterans, Branch 141 of the Royal Canadian Legion. After retiring from the electrical trade, Aleck kept busy with his strawberry u-pick market garden. Everyone in the neighbourhood knew the Strawberry Man. He also helped his sons and daughters-in-law with the construction and renovations of their homes and was always available to neighbours, friends and relatives to help with electrical work. He was an avid angler and bowler, and travelled world-wide with Stella. Aleck took great pride and pleasure and was very involved in the lives of his grandsons. He was always available to drive them to practices and attended most of their games. Grandma's and Grandpa's place was Neil's and Marc's second home. We would like to thank the medical staff at Seven Oaks General Hospital and St. Boniface Hospital (Palliative Care Unit) for the care and compassion they provided Aleck and his family. Please join us in a celebration of Aleck's and Stella's lives at Larters at St. Andrews Golf and Country Club, 30 River Road, St. Andrews, MB at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 14, 2012. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Boniface Hospital Foundation, C1026-409 Taché Ave., Winnipeg, MB R2H 2A6. Dear Babaluk family I am so sorry to hear the passing of both your mom and dad. Your parents and my parents were such good friends. I grew up knowing both of your parents and held such high respect for both of them. They were pillars of our community and without their dedication St. Andrews School and Community Club would not be what it is today. My deepest condolences to the family. Sincerely, Ronda - Posted by: Ronda (Yuzark) Pfeiffer (Friend) on: Jan 11, 2012
