NORMAN JAMES (JIM) BOBBY On Wednesday, January 11, 2012, with family at his side, Jim Bobby passed away at the age of 70 after a courageous battle with leukemia. He is predeceased by wife Joy, parents John and Evelyn Bobby, and brother Ivan. He is survived by daughters, Dawn (Dave), Kelly (Bill); granddaughters, Janine, Jenica and Brooke; sisters Edna and Lori; brother Terry and their spouses and families. Jim was born on September 6, 1941 in St. Boniface, Manitoba. He attended Whytewold Beach Elementary School and then went to Gimli High School until Grade 11 and graduated Grade 12 from Sisler High School in Winnipeg. Shortly after he graduated high school, he joined the Department of Transport and became a meteorologist. One of his first postings was to Big Trout Lake, Ontario and he had several postings to Alert at various times before he was posted to the ocean met ship, Quadra, based out of Esquimalt, BC. He worked at several met stations throughout the North and across Western Canada, including The Pas, Regina, Winnipeg and Gimli. He met Joy in Matlock and they married on September 12, 1970. They settled down there, and Jim continued to work for Environment Canada at the Gimli weather station for many years, and later at the Winnipeg office. He had opportunities to work at stations in the north, even after retirement and enjoyed the many people he met along the way. In later years he briefly operated Matlock store, and had some other odd jobs with the Free Press, the Sun and the carwash, always liking to keep busy. Jim loved golfing, hunting, crossword puzzles, and watching most sports on TV. He and Joy enjoyed entertaining friends and family with many BBQ's and fireworks parties and bonfires. He was always available to help his family and didn't complain. For a time he was a warden at the Whytewold Anglican Church, and he spent some time on the board of the local Metis Federation. The family wishes to thank Dr. R. C. Patel and all the staff at Gimli Community Health Centre for their excellent care. Special thanks to Dad's friends and neighbours, Palliative Care workers and homecare workers who helped him in the last few months, we are very grateful. Funeral service will be Friday, January 20 at 1:00 p.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, Selkirk, with Rev. Robin Mather officiating. Interment of ashes will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba or the charity of one's choice. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements www.gilbartfuneralhome.com

Condolences & Memories (9 entries)

  • Growing up, I spent a lot of time at Jim and Joy's place and they always treated me like one of their own kids. One of my favorite memories of Uncle Jim is when I was driving out to their place; a car pulled along beside me on the two-lane highway and I thought to myself, "Who does this joker think he is and why doesn't he just pass me already?". I looked over, and there was my Uncle Jim with a big grin on his face. Thanks for the laughs and the memories Jim. I'll always think of you whenever I play River Raid. • My heartfelt sympathy goes out to Jim's daughters (Dawn & Kelly), granddaughters & family. My fondest memories growing up, was spending time out in Matlock at Jim & Joy's place (hanging out with my cousin Dawn), for a couple of weeks every summer, it was an adventure for a city girl, I remember the bonfires, wiener & marshmallow roasts, running thru the woods to Auntie Evy's (Jim's mom) house, walking down to Wpg Beach, fashion shows with our Barbies, always lots of fun at Jim & Joy's! Jim had a great smile & a great laugh. You will be missed by all! "Say Hi," to Joy (now that you are with her again), she is missed as well! - Posted by: Cheryl Tychynski (nee McFarlane) (Cousin) on: Jan 17, 2012

  • I remember that Jim was always so welcoming at any family gathering and always made a point to stop and inquire about my welfare and what was happening with my girls. • Heartfelt condolences go out to all of the family. I can remember Jim when I was a little girl and was always running over to his Mother's home. I too grew up in the same area, about 1 or 2 long city blocks away from his home. I also went to Whytewold School and Gimli High. In the many years that have passed I still remember the silly things I did and I am sure Jim did as well. All my love to all. He will be sadly missed. - Posted by: Judy Pilgrim (Cousin) on: Jan 16, 2012
