Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryGUNNAR HELGI THORVALDSON On January 23, 2012 Helgi Thorvaldson, aged 87 years, of Selkirk and formerly of Kenora, ON, passed away peacefully at the Deer Lodge Centre in Winnipeg. Helgi was predeceased by his parents, Herman and Johanna Thorvaldson, brothers Walter, Karl, Kenneth and Harold, and sisters Betty Thorvaldson and Gwen Munro. He leaves surviving a son Marno of Maple Ridge, BC, daughter Joanne of Kenora, ON, grandsons Josh and Lucas, a sister Olive Macleod (Jack) and numerous nieces and nephews. Helgi was born in Selkirk on February 24,1924. He served overseas during the Second World War with the Sherbrook Fusseliers, 27th Tank Division and was a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion for many years. He was a commercial fisherman all his life and had fished all over Western Canada and the north. He settled at Dog Tooth Lake near Kenora where he fished until retirement. He returned to Selkirk around 2000 where he enjoyed his retirement years. Helgi loved a stiff shot of rye and his skoal snuff, cherry flavoured. He was quite the character, a man you never forgot once you met. At Helgi's request cremation has taken place and a private family interment will take place at a later date. The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at the Deer Lodge Centre, Tudor Home and Selkirk Home Care for all the excellent care and concern. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements. www.gilbartfuneralhome.com
