ANNELIESE CALDEN Anneliese Calden passed away on February 1, 2012, with her daughter by her side, after a very brief illness. She was predeceased by her parents, sisters Hildegard and Edith, her first two husbands, casualties of the Second World War, her sons Walter and David, daughter Monique, and grandson Michael. She is survived by sister Maria-Elisabeth, husband Karl-Friedrich Calden, children Hildegard (Jim), Rika (Jeff), Mike (Heather), Robert, son-in-law Bryan, daughters-in-law Heather (John) and Martha; grandchildren Patrizia (Rob), Christopher, Douglas, Annamarie (Stephan), Nicole (Lars), Ian, Betina, Martina, and Rayna; great-grandchildren Amanda and Jeffrey, and nieces and nephews and their families. Anneliese was born in Germany on September 16, 1919. She grew up in Thueringen on the family farm. She married a soldier, Walter Nachbauer, in 1940. He died without seeing his son, Walter. She married another soldier during the war, who also perished. Monika (aka Monique) was born in 1944. When Thueringen became part of East Germany, she escaped with her children to West Germany, as did the rest of her family. She worked with her mother and step-father for large landholders, married Karl-Friedrich in 1950, and Hildegard and Rika came along. In 1954 the family moved to Canada and Anneliese and Karl-Friedrich worked for Searle Farms in East Selkirk. Mike was born in 1957, and they moved to Selkirk. Anneliese began her career as a nurse's aide at the Selkirk General Hospital and made life-long friends there. David was born and lived only a few days. In 1968 Robert joined the family. After retiring from the hospital, Anneliese worked for Home Care for a number of years. She also fed, housed and babysat various grandchildren. She became involved with RotaryAnnes and House of Economy. Church involvement was ongoing, she sang in the choir and the Evangelical Lutheran Women could count on her support. Family visits were always welcome and her wonderful cooking was enticing. Anneliese loved gardening and flowers, camping and nature, exploring the country and continent, dogs and horses, corresponding with her mother and sisters, later telephoning them, and most especially visiting them and her moved-away children. She also passed on respect for other cultures, thrift and recycling, family loyalty and faith, gratitude and social graces. We miss Anneliese, Mom and Oma, very much. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Tuesday, February 7 at 2:00 p.m. in the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Selkirk with Pastor Stan Richards officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Good Shepherd Memorial Fund or a charity of your choice. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements. www.gilbartfuneralhome.com

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • I remember Mrs. Calden as a wonderful and caring person. When I was younger we often visited with her and her patience was endless. I loved to listen to her and talk with her when she tended her flowers. She was a remarkable woman and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. - Posted by: Lori Wieler (Heather's sister) on: Feb 06, 2012

  • Our deepest condolences to Karl and the family. We will miss our visits with Anneliese and her enjoyment of nature. Her social graces were from the old school, reminding us so much of my Mom. Rest in Peace dear friend. Heinz & Christa - Posted by: Heinz and Christa Richter (Friends) on: Feb 04, 2012
