HENRY H. KUHL 1914 - 2012 On Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at Salem Home in Winkler, MB Henry H. Kuhl went to his eternal rest. He reached the age of 97 years, ten months and fifteen days. Although we will miss him, we know that he is at Home with Jesus. Henry H. Kuhl, our father, was born on a farm near Winkler, MB on March 24, 1914. He was the first child of Henry and Maria (nee Bluhm) Kuhl. For four years he attended the Zion school northwest of Winkler. After his parents moved to Gnadenthal in 1924, he went to a private German school. When public school was opened in 1925, dad continued his education there. Dad loved music. During his teens, he sang in choirs and played several stringed instruments. He also sang in a male quartet and enjoyed practices and performances. Literary evenings were part of the entertainment in Gnadenthal and Dad even took up the challenge of acting in the village drama. Dad farmed with his father in Gnadenthal until 1941 when he purchased his own farm near Plum Coulee. He married Susan Harder in 1938. God blessed their marriage with five children: Cecile, Irene, Donald, Henry James and Kendale. In 1962, they moved to Winkler. Our father had a strong work ethic. He loved his family and worked hard to provide a good living for us. He was a man of integrity, strength and determination. He read whenever he had time, as he had a thirst for knowledge and often challenged family and friends for a debate. Dad's love for farming led to many other agricultural related enterprises. Due to his willingness to work and strong organizational skills, he became involved in many community services, such as Winkler Town Council, Valley Rehab (known as Gateway Resources) and the Dr. C.W. Wiebe Foundation. As he had a heart for those with special needs, Dad chose to become one of the founding members of Valley Rehab where he served as a board member for many years. During his retirement, he took up golfing and enjoyed a good game of chess with friends. He also took on the challenge of learning to play Bridge. Dad loved his church and worshipped there faithfully. Dad will be remembered for his hard work, community services, resilience, commitment to family and acceptance of others. He will be greatly missed by his wife, Susan with whom he shared joy and sorrow for 73 years and seven months, one daughter, Cecile Toews and husband, Jake, two sons, Don and wife, Liz (nee Voth), Henry James, one son-in-law, Henry Voth and wife Susan, ten grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He is survived by his brothers, Dave and Kate Kuhl, John Kuhl and Evelyn Dyck. He was predeceased by his daughter, Irene in 1994, his son, Kendale in 1962, his brother, Sam and wife, Elma Kuhl, sisters, Ann and husband George Sawatsky, Ella and husband Dave Bueckert, brother-in-law, Henry Dyck and sister-in-law, Lillian Kuhl. Viewing will be on Saturday from 1:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Sunday from 1:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Wiebe Funeral Home 121 8th St. Winkler. Memorial service will be held on Monday, February 13, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Winkler Mennonite Brethren Church 120 Pineview Dr. with interment prior at 11:00 a.m. at Winkler Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Henry's memory to either, the Salem Foundation Inc., Gateway Resources or the Boundary Trails Health Centre Foundation, all available at the church. One of his favourite verses was Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy - meditate on these things.
