EVANGELINE MITCHELL With great regret and heavy hearts we must inform you that in the early evening of February 14, 2012, a beautiful and vibrant light went out in the Caribbean community in Winnipeg; A beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend. Evangeline Mitchell passed away suddenly at the Health Sciences Centre, while recovering from a recent surgery. Evangeline Mitchell, who was known to her friends as Vangy , was born October 4, 1940 to Wilfred and Dora Nanan in Papiro, Trinidad. She resided in Prince Town, Trinidad until she immigrated to Canada in 1970, where she reunited with her brother (Kenneth). It was here that she pursued a higher education, completing her studies in Cosmetology. Vangy was a strong, independent entrepreneur and opened her own hair salon in 1980 (Angie's Coiffures), which she maintained for 25 years. In her 35 years of experience, Vangy mentored many young stylists and acted as a cosmetology examiner from 1998 to 2005. She was highly regarded and respected for her craft and thoroughly enjoyed making others look beautiful. We have certainly lost a genuinely loving and generous individual who gave selflessly to her family, friends and community. Vangy was predeceased by her siblings Elaine, Rudolph, Gloria, Kenneth, Monica and Veronica. She is survived by her sister Jean Dewan and her brother Winston Nanan. Vangy is also survived by her two children Andre and Kathleen and son-in-law David, five grandchildren, Felisha, Page, Blade, Solo, and David II. She will be remembered for her strength, will and tenacity in life. Her infectious laugh and magnetic personality will be missed, but the unconditional love she showed to all has been imprinted on our hearts forever. We invite you to come celebrate this beautiful woman's life. For our family and friends who are unable to attend, the service will be broadcast live to view on your computer at www.webcastc.com/mosaic/evangelinemitchell Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, February 22 at 1:00 p.m. at Mosaic Funeral Chapel, 1839 Inkster Blvd. Cremation to follow with interment at a later date. • My biological father, Kenneth Nanan, passed away months before I was born in 1979. In learning more about the Nanan side of the family, I came across Evangeline's notice of passing. I'm sorry I did not get to meet her. She sounds like a very sweet woman who was surrounded by many loved ones. Rest in peace. - Posted by: Alisa Nelson (Niece) on: Oct 30, 2024

  • My grandma Florence of Gimli, Manitoba was dear friends with Vangy when Vangy first immigrated to Canada. My mother Delaney, daughter of Kenneth Nanan, had the opportunity to meet Vangy shortly after Kenneth passed at a young age. Vangy is remembered as a welcoming and warming soul.
